what is impartial advice then? my MW wasnt being impartial when she recommended breast over bottle really was she? Were the hosp offering impartial advice when they gave ruby aptamil in those crucial hours? was my HV being impartial when she suggested i stopped pumping at about 3 months when she saw how utterly exhausting exclusive expressing is? in fact, is the NHS even being impartial when they promote BF?
the very idea of impartial is that is doesnt take sides, doesnt promote one side over the other, so it seems that what people here want is 'impartial' advice from the FF corner, but not from the BF corner, because (and dont take this the wrong way, because i DID BF) those posters about breast is best, all the literature and promotion of BF, etc etc, is DEFINETLY not 'impartial'
so, if i called the aptamil line and got advice, it wouldnt exactly be impartial, but on the same hand, if i called the laleche league, or similar, (or in fact even the nhs, or my BF positive midwife) it wouldnt exactly be impartial either, would it?

*sigh* finally!

Impartial may not be quite the right word. The difference between calling Aptamil and La Leche League for advice is that one stands to profit (literally) if you decide to stop breastfeeding. Where money is involved the best interests of you and your child may not be.

Was just writing something along those lines...maybe 'without financial agenda' might be a more accurate phrase?

do you guys think that the specific brand of drugs that your dr prescribes to you isnt dependent on cost / commission / profit? this entire worl revolves around money!

The term "Orphan Drug" springs to mind (I think that's the correct term). Where necessary research on a drug isn't completed and the drug cannot be sold because there is no profit in it.

My attitude doesn't stink. Food these days are full of crap. Not just junk food. Most food we eat that we think is healthy that is sprayed or pumped full of antibiotics.

And its not just McDonalds and Burger King. So that is what is hilarious to me.

The cow and gate one drives me mad

'To give your baby their RDA of iron you would have to give them 20 litres of cows milk! But just 2 cups of cow and gate follow on milk gives them all they need' (not exact words since I cant remember it exactly) Then in small print at the bottom of the screen it says 'cows milk is not a good source of iron'

Even my OH was shocked at the blatant gilt trip! xx

Impartial is most likely not the right word, true impartiality very rarely exists.
For me the difference is in the agenda.
The agenda of the formula company is clearly profit, wheras the agenda of the NHS (as an organisation) in promoting breastfeeding is based on prevention of poor health/disease/illness, promotion of good health/wellbeing and therefore releasing of resources and funding.

I wish some ladies from the trimesters would give some input into weither the advert realy is brainwashing or not, after all its them its aimed at.
We have already made our choices and live with them so realy the advert wouldnt have the same affect on us and we are free to moan about it either way :)

I honestly dont think a woman who is planning on bf is persuaded by adverts like that and any woman who is would have to have had the idea of ff in mind to begine with.
Very few women will ever think sod it that advert makes me want to ff, the desision to ff comes from many reasons and those reasons would still be there advert or no advert.

i dont get the comparison? i wasnt suggesting that they use drugs that arent researched properly but that where there are different companies manufacturing THE SAME drug then cost / commission / profit influences which 'brand' the dr prescribes.

I agree it will have little to no influence on a woman deciding whether to breastfeed or formula feed. I'm more concerned about women who are struggling to breastfeed getting poor advice.

I wish my baby could read, he's due a nap and this thread would most certainly send him to sleep. The last 20 pages or so are just going round and round in circles.

That's so rude. No one is forcing you to be in here and read it

No it's not. If I didn't sit here and read it I wouldn't be able to come to the conclusion that its going round in circles, would I?

Yet you're still reading it :dohh:

Does it affect your life?

But who realy would look at a formula company for breastfeeading advice, the advert is mainly refering to al lthe other info it can give such as nappies, weaning, toddler development, games to play with your baby, nutrition during pregnancy.
It doesnt take much common sense to use the other info for what it is and contact proper offical helplines for somthing like bf rather then a formula company that is obviously not going to be experts.

Thats like contacting mcdonalds for dieting advice, why would you do that?

I've had weird moments when I've seen an advert for formula and thought it sounded so good that maybe it would be better than what my body would make!

I still decided to breastfeed but I imagine that people who are sitting on the fence about breastfeeding or who are struggling might be encouraged to just give up and give formula because of the way they word things. Using phrases like 'if you decide to move on from breastfeeding' and targeting it at 6+ months to me is encouraging people to stop earlier than the recommended time xx

What is the likeliness of a BFing mum phoning a Formula company for advice? I FFed but I know about LLL, but, even if you didn't know about them the first thing you would do is google and pages full of BF sites/helplines come up. New Mum struggling or not, I doubt they would skip though all of those sites to find an SMA website for advice.

Flipping heck, i disappear for a couple of hours and over 100 more posts!!!!
