Underhand tactics - formula companies

I think I was too busy trying to take the bottle apart to work out where the milk had vanished to rather then trying to feed my dolly :)

I don't get that aspect either.

I grew up giving my Dolls bottles... but as soon as I found out I was pregnant I instantly knew I was going to breastfeed. Not that I find anything wrong with breastfeeding dolls mind you! I like them. However, I think its a bit of a stretch to say that bottles with dolls send the wrong message. There wasn't a kid out there who had more bottles than I did for my "babies". A child doesn't (and cannot) think in the same capacity as an adult.

I wouldn't not give Sofia a doll with a bottle, or even consider being upset by it. It's play! And anyway, some babies are fed by bottle and some by breast. My niece was ff but my sister didn't have a problem with her sitting and watching me bf, she was so interested and asked lots of questions (2 yr old) and then bf her teddies.

Well on American tv or not, I see it umteen times a day some days and it's nuts! I get free formula in the mail, cupons, always on sale in flyers etc... BUT you know what really peeves me off...? Baby dolls!!!! I was looking and they all come with bottles... :( I thought a breastfeeding one would be so cute to give Kayleigh when she got older. I don't want her growing up like we did thinking formula is the way it is, yes it's there and available to those who need it, but it isn't what nature intended and breastfeeding shouldn't be the minority. I don't mean it in a bad way either, I just think it needs to be more "normal" to breastfeed.

I think the reason why toy makers probably stayed away from the idea of a breastfed dolly (rather then the little ones with bottles) is I think to a young child the concept of a bottle fed baby is probably easier to understand and relate to.
I dont think its done with any form of brainwashing in mind just purely as a appeal value.

To a young girl (and boys) they are constantly being told dont pull your top up in public, put your skirt back down so I think the whole concept of then explaining to them that its actualy ok to pull your top up to feed is just maybe a but much for them so toy makers just probably stear clear in general and leave that to parents to explain the finer details of babies.
All a toy making company realy cares about is getting the product out there and then making more money on acceseries like extra clothes, strollers and such.

They are just covering their own butts because lets face it as sad as it is there would always be some nut job group out there that would jump on them with law suits claiming stupid things like "your teaching our child to expose themselves in public" normaly some fanatic oddball group

Must be different then here in Alberta somehow, because I only saw the one commercial on CMT which I don't even watch.... haha and I usually see a nice breastfeeding commercial for Michigan. I am just curious what channel you see this ad on?

TLC....

Must be different I guess....

I don't think doll making companies have any underhand motives in making the bottles, it's just an accessory, just another thing to sell  I'm in 2 minds about whether I'd take the bottle out of the packet before giving it to Aisling though, I'd sort of not want her to grow up just assuming that bottle feeding is the only way - but I do wonder if this is when things can be taken a little too far, I doubt she'll even remember it when she's 15! :dohh:

No need for separate bfing dolls though, you can bf any doll or teddy! Although I was given this weird little horse for Aisling that looks like it has a chicken's head, you unzip the underneath of it and there's magnets there that you attach the foals to so they can feed! That freaks me out a bit!

I was just going to say that...you can breastfeed any doll....

I don't think there is anything wrong with a doll and bottle. I can't see how it would deter a girl from BF'ing just because she had a doll and bottle as a child. Any doll can be breastfed anyway.

I think the world has gotten too obsessed with being 'PC' ....
I dont get it..? lol

LOL!

I didn't say they had alterior motives, or it was wrong, immoral etc... I just am sad I can't find any breastfeeding ones... I don't want my words twisted to sound like I'm making all the toy companies sound like they are involed in a big conspiracy to push bottle feeding... I just think I breastfeeding doll would be cute...:shrug::shrug::shrug: I played with bottles with my dolls as a child and even though I FF my oldest, I am happily breastfeeding my daughter.

After complaining.... and talking to OH about this thread he just informed me that he seen a breastfeeding commercial on TV last night :D He doesn't remember which channel but he seen it. I've never seen one before, and tv is alway on in the background, so Canadian or American... Yay!

I grew up in the States and can honestly not remember any FF commercials  whether it was because I wasn't looking I dunno?

Here on TLC I see LOADS of Pampers and Gerber commercials but the only FF commercials I've seen have always aired after 9 p.m.? I don't watch much tv during the day now but when I was pregnant I watched loads of those baby shows, been racking my brain all day and again I don't remember seeing any FF commercials during that time. might be a difference of areas as well??

And why can't breastfeeding mums get off their bloody high horses - don't usually get involved in these arguments that escalate to ridiculous levels but this really pi***d me off

woah. i don't even know how to respond to that :nope:

this thread has gone remarkably well considering the subject content

Let's not let one poster who didn't read the full thread throw it off it's rails :flower:

could be. I know I see the Gerber goodstart one a lot... and there was the Enfamil Premium one too, I spoke to a friend and found out I guess it's the US version of A+ here.

I have read all 133 pages :smug:
And for emmad339's information parts of it were actually really interesting.
If she could look past the dinner and disabled frogs i found the topics of the effects of advertising, subliminal advertising, brand committment, local norms and the support system in the NHS very interesting...to be fair i think pretty much every possible interesting aspect of discussing BF and FF has been at least touched apon in this thread so Iv got to wonder why emmad339 even bothered looking at a feeding orientated thread if she wasnt interested in any of those topics?
I honestly dont mean that as a dig or at her personally but i think one of the problems with this topic is that people read posts looking for the digs and insults, not fact and debate.
But thats all iv got to say...thanks very much ladies for an interesting day of reading :D

well said  it's been refreshing to see this debate last as long as it has with only a few silly comments!

I can't believe you read them all! lol  !

i've just finished reading it all too - it was like my very long bedtime story!!

and i completely agree.. with what kris has said!!.

oh and i've found this thread actually really intresting, and i'm surprised it has gone on for 134 pages, and is still open!!
xx

 No need to be surprised! Threads only get closed when people start taking things to a personal level, name calling, mud slinging... etc.

When there isn't any of that in excess, no need to close!

Yup I have seen the breastfeeding one quite frequently now, but just recently. :)

Whats Gerber? is it just another formula brand?

What I meant was that I don't think there is any real need for a separate BF doll as it again separates BF and bottle feeding. Any doll can be BF so a little girl might choose to BF her doll one day (because she sees her Mum doing it) and bottle feed the next day (because she sees another girl doing it). Either way, I don't think it would influence her decision about BF later in life.

Having said that, if a BF doll was on the market I would have no objections to it at all. I just don't think there is a particular need for one.

RE the breastfeeding doll. There was a thread on here where someone posted a doll that breastfeeds and make little gulping noises when you "bring it to the breast"..I'm sure it was third tri I saw it in... I'll go and have a look for it and post the link if I find it :hugs:

EDIT:https://www.babyandbump.com/pregnancy-third-trimester/412478-breast-feeding-doll.html
That's the link for it. :flower:
