So a few weeks ago I noticed my lil boy had one pupil bigger than the other. A lot bigger in dim lighting... After loads of fretting a and e visits we were sent to the eye infirmary and had a simple eye test. They say they don't know why it is the way it is.

That's as far as we have gettin. We are back again in June.

After googling, there is a few reasons that one pupil can be bigger than the other. I'm freaking out... Everyone else seems to think everything is "fine"

To me that's my baby and I guess it's not normal for it...what's normal I spose?

Just wondering if anyone has experience of this??

They say its just a variant... Like one foot bigger than the other. No one seems concerned at all!

When I was at and e the nurse had the same thing and was like I'm fine and have had it since I was small... I couldn't tell with her tho.

He's just so lil...

Hum, hopefully someone will come along who has some experience with this! My mind immediatly jumps to all manner of horrible things

Was your baby born with this? Dd you baby hit his head at any point? Acting funny or fine? My husbands one pupil is larger than the other and for him, it's congenital. Google anisocoria. If it is concerning to you, then request further testing from your pediatrician.

I have this!

For me, I have worst sight in the eye that has the larger pupil, I find sometimes I can get headaches as my stronger eye over compensates for my weaker eye if I'm focusing on something for a long time.

I do wear glasses to correct the difference and help with headaches, other than that there is no other problems. It's just one of those things that make us all unique :)

Both DH and DS have this. Both from birth. DH has no problems from it. It's a noticeable difference, but one you have to look for. I asked our (good, new) pediatrician about it and she said that as long as both pupils are reacting properly to light and dark stimuli, there's nothing to worry about. Sometimes it can be a symptom of bigger problems, but those will present themselves in other, more noticeable ways. In dim light, esp, it's really noticeable in our son. Apparently it becomes less noticeable as they age?? Not sure about that one.

Wow thanks for the replies girls.

Na, he hasn't hit his head or anything. I assuming he was born with it... I noticed it at 7 weeks old. I've been dealing with lots of anxiety since dexter was born so I think maybes I was looking for something to be wrong or so professionals around me have said.

Well I'm guessing the doctor at the hospital, the gp surgery and the eye doctor would have said if anything was terribly wrong. For me tho I can't seem to relax about it, the eye doctor just said everything looks good, we can't tell u why it is the way it is and left it at that. Darn google sets the mind racing really... Always horror stories.

I googled it straight away and came across anisicoria, I find it cool that they eyes can be this way... I knew when he was inside he was a unique lil baba! He's a happy baby, he's progressing great. Smiled from day one! Midwives and everyone couldn't believe it.

I'm just a chronic worrier at the min!

Again thank you so much for replying girls.

In dim light, it's super noticeable. Not so in bright light.

Was this from birth? They still haven't told me which one is the "abnormal" one. I say the bigger one, but I'm guessing it would b the smaller one?

Yeah me too! I went straight to a and e. over that weekend I was there 3 times cos I was sure they weren't cin what I was... One point I was told I was cin things! Because of my anxiety I was crying like crazy thinkin it was something terrible. Apparently here In South Shields is wrong to be worried about your child. The doctor told me he was more concerned with me!!

I've always had it, sometimes it's more noticeable than others in photos.

It didn't really affect me until i started at secondary school and had to start reading the board, so not until my teens :)

Wow, crazy to think I had never heard or seen it. Seems that it isn't as rare as google says eh haha. So when did u get ya glasses?

I was 12 when i got my first pair and have worn them on and off since, mostly for computer work and driving now

I have this, but as a result of damage to the optic nerve. I hasten to add I wasn't born with it, I acquired it when I got the damage...!

The key point here is people can have anisocoria and have it be benign as long as the eye is reacting normally to light, they're healthy and the optic nerve is healthy or it can be a symptom of something. It sounds like in your LO's case it's a benign condition, but if you're worried maybe you could ask the opthamologist or his pediatrician to explain to you how they know it's not a bad thing and that it's benign? Have they checked his eyes? Is he in good health generally? :)

Well everyone who has looked into his eyes seem happy with them.. Just I haven't really had a good explanation off anyone as to what it is apart from a variant. Can I ask if its very noticeable?

I've got this! Had it since birth. The only problems I've ever had with it is people thinking I'd taken drugs on a night out!! Mine is pretty noticeable.

I've got huge pupils in both eyes....to where people have made comments even in grade school about it. It isn't noticeable in bright light, but when dark, my pupils are like black saucers. It's just one of those things, if they change equally in the light, I would say it's fine hun xx

Haha Irish, is it really noticeable in the light aswell... Dexters sort of goes down to equal size. Only just slightly bigger.

I have an older lad, he's 6 I've never took much notice of his pupils until this with dexter... It's become an obsession if I'm honest.. I look at everyone's eyes and really check them over haha. Well I checked jays eyes and he also has saucers of a night... I was lying last night talkin in bed with him and wow... They almost take over his entire iris!

I should trust in what the professionals are sayin, but I'm finding it really hard to believe in them. Especially when it's not the "norm" x

Well, we all know what doctors in Newcastle can be like! I live over the water but they are just as insensitive here. From what other people have said, aslong as he seems ok in himself its probably just one of those things :) don't stress too much, but if you feel something is wrong, don't feel silly for asking them to investigate further x
