Hey ladies-

Just wondering if anyone has found any formulas that help with their LO's reflux? Up until this point my LO has only had breastmilk, but her reflux has gotten so bad that I'm willing to try anything that will make her reflux pain go away/get better.

She has a prescription for ranitidine (sp?), which I had to beg the doctors to let us try, but it doesn't seem to be helping. When I voice my concerns to the doctor, they sweep it under the rug and say she is just colicky. They don't take into account that she shows every classic reflux sign (Whines while breast feeding, arches back after feeds, screams when she burps or spits up, spits up after every feed, sticks tounge out, feeds often, etc).

I'm at the end of my rope. LO screamed at me for 5+ hours today and i was going to give formula a shot to see if it helps. I just want a "happy" baby, I hate seeing her in pain and right now it doesn't seem as tough anything I try helps.

Have you tried eliminating dairy from your diet? A dairy protein intolerance can cause reflux in babies so eliminating It from your diet may help.

Both of my boys have suffered from silent reflux. DS1 was on soy formula which now I guess is not recommended and LO is on a lactose free formula and doing fairly well (Target brand sensitive formula.)

They do make formula for spit up, it's a little thicker so it stays down better. Good luck!

I can't help on the formula front but I did want to direct you toward this book: https://www.amazon.com/Colic-Solved...0681/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1339641905&sr=8-7

It deals with the mechanics of reflux and I've heard that it can really help parents learn to advocate for their kids instead of getting brushed away with a "colic" diagnosis, which is what it sounds like is happening to you.

Good luck! :hugs:

As pp stated u could try eliminating dairy. If that doesn't work you could try soy based formula. I'm sure there are other ones as well. Good luck!

One of the other girls that used to post here talks to me on facebook, her daughter has reflux and is on https://www.amazon.com/Similac-Alimentum-Hypoallergenic-Formula-1-Quart/dp/B000ARWL46 that stuff

She says her baby is doing really well on it, she was also instructed to add rice cereal to it too for reflux..

I express my breastmilk and my doctor told me to put rice cereal in it to help it stay down. So far it has been pretty helpful, only downfall is it causes constipation. But my doctor also told me to eliminate dairy.

Rice Cereal. Been doing that for 2 months now, has helped loads.

That stuff is VERY thin. So you would almost have to add cereal to it to thicken it up or it will spew out like a fountain :haha:

Wow, so many helpful tips...thank you for not making me feel like i'm going crazy! :flower:

I have eliminated almost all dairy from my diet (I occasionally will have 1/2 cup of lactose free milk with cereal and I have 1 slice of cheese with a sandwich for lunch). I may try some of the soy based formulas as both DH and I have an intollerance for milk.

I have trouble expressing enough milk for LO to get enough as she seems to always be at my breast feeding :haha: but I might try to pump enough for 1 feed and mix in some rice cereal.

Thanks again for all the helpful tips! Hopefully we can find the right one that works for her :)

I've read good things about Enfamil AR---though we've not tried it---turns out our LO is just really gassy :). It has added rice starch and is thicker than traditional formula.

^^ Similac Sensitive Spit-Up had that added too.

that's what we use for LO and the similac sensitive for fussiness and gas.

I use sensitive too, it helps tyler, but my baby is still screamy and gassy some days =/

Alton is on Enfamil AR and ranitidine. I feel like I need to wear a poncho when I feed him because he spits up even with the Enfamil. I have a friend that has a reflux baby and she pumps and adds rice ceral to her milk. I wish I had known this because I would have done with. I would try that before going to formula. My doctor just handed me a can of formula and feed him 2 oz after every time you breastfeed. well that made my supply go down and I gave up.

Do the sensitive or soy formulas make your LO constipated at all? Sorry, I'm a formula rookie so I'm a bit clueless!

Alton get constipated. His stools are always formed and sometimes I have to help him by putting his knees to his chest. I will give him Karo syrup or 2 oz of extra water a day to help him have a bowel movement if he has not gone in a day or so. The doctor really does not consider it constipation unless it is many days without a bowel movement like 3-5 days.

I had no problems with the sensitive formulas.
the soy however I heard causes really bad constipation and tummy aches.

I havent tried soy but i have no issues with the sensitive either..

I was using Alimentum, and found it helped quite a bit, but in Canada it is only available in premixed cans and is expensive. We then tried Similac Sensitive and are now on Isomil (Similac's soy formula). I haven't found much difference between the three (but we have only been on soy a couple of days). DD has been pretty regular (at least once a day) but is VERY gassy.

Originally I had DD on Enfamil A+ but she was not keeping it down at all.

DD is on ranitidine as well, and I find she seems to have much more reflux pain with breast milk as well, though I still combi feed for her to get the benefits breast milk.

I don't have a suggestion on formulas, but I do recommend Dr. Brown's bottles. I suspect my LO has some reflux as well (many of the symptoms you describe) and these bottles seem to help.

Good luck - I know it's frustrating to be tired and watch your LO in pain with no relief!
