Hi, I have recently been having pain and menstrual type cramps after I use the bathroom. I finally called the doctor this morning and was told I have a Urinary Tract Infection. She gave me Bactrim. Has anyone taken this and can give any advice? I hate taking medicine when its not necessary during pregnancy. I have never had a UTI before and I was informed that it can lead to a kidney infection if left untreated. I plan to take it, but would first like to know any other women's experiences.

Thanks

It's fine, and DEF take it! You are sooo lucky that you only experienced pain and menstrual cramps...uti's can be the worst thing ever and literally knock you off your feet and make you SO sick! (I have one right now...so I'm a little passionate about it haha) And yes, it can lead to a kidney infection, which will land you in the hospital extremely ill :( I hate them so much!

Better to take it now as it can set off your contraction if you dont take it now. It has happened to me and led me to be rushed to different hospital in order to save the baby or he was coming early. So they managed to stop my contraction. Drink a lot of water or you can have a pint of Cranberry to prevent it from becoming an infection. Xxx

I know I should take it, which I probably will BUT i absolutely HATE taking medication during pregnancy. It always worries me!! I am going to def get some cranberry juice. I just wish i knew more about the medication. I called my doctor to ask if there were any substitutes, I spoke to the nurse and she pretty much told me no but did tell me I didnt have to take it if i didnt want to. The doctor is supposed to call me back tomo to let me know my options. I am thinking of just taking it though.

Im assuming u are state side since i have lived there and being a serial uti sufferer most my life, ive taken bactrim but only over there, it worked a treat for me when most didnt, even in a lower and less dosage! Please do take it cause uti's can have awful implications on baby and kidney infections even moreso! Please take it and get loads rest.

Also bare in mind cranberry juice is best as a preventative tract health method not as a treatment contrary to popular belief, i spent weeks in a urology ward last year and the top consultant in scotland told me this. He said the properties in cranberry juice can actually inflame the tract and bladder even more and that its best used as a preventative
uti method not a treatment, and musnt be cocktail or from concentrate.

This is all stuff ive learned from horrendous uti stuff over the years, and thank the good Lord i havent had ONE since ive been pregnant! Go figure!! Xx

Thanks SparkleBug, your advice was great. I decided to take it as the benefits do outweigh the risk. And yes, I am in the states...in Florida.
