Hello again, beautiful mommies!

Here I am again with one of my food questions... So sorry to be so boring and monotone with my posted subjects, but I am craving so many things!

My latest craving has been Surimi Salad/Crab Salad(I blame that on not eating a lot of fish lately: the smell is just so... not appealing to me, right now...)

And I wondered... Am I even allowed to eat that? It's processed fish, isn't it?

If you guys tell me I can go for it, I will be heading to the next store to buy Baguette and a can of it... :happydance:

I'll be waiting for your answers!

I ate it twice, once at week 8 then now at week 10. I really tried to chew each bite slowly because it was the inari type and I know sushi is a big no-no. Well, I didn't feel bad afterwards and I love the fattening mayo taste.

We had a party on Sunday and someone brought Crab dip mixed with a french onion dip.....sooooo yummy!!!!!!! Today is the last day before I throw it out, I can't wait to get home and dip a chip!

Sushi isn't a no no? I've eaten it a ton of times this pregnancy and I've been fine. As long as you get it from a proper restaurant and not just a stall in the market type place! I've been to yo sushi a bunch of times, I know they freeze their fish first so it's perfectly fine. Also any sushi from shops/supermarkets has to be frozen first so it's perfectly good. I love sushi!

I asked my OB about sushi before a trip to Hawaii while pregnant with DD2. At first he was all, gee - the Japanese eat sushi throughout pregnancy, so why not? Then he stopped for a second and made a comment about a study being done about birth rates in Japan and advised against it. I couldn't find anything relevant online to document any additional risks, but that was enough to convince me to avoid it. Not typically my favorite during first tri anyway (Thai food is the only thing that consistently wins the ms war for me).

In general my understanding is fish in general has the mercury problem, so we should avoid the big fish that absorb the most mercury (kingfish for example), or eating fish A LOT (like fish more than 4 times a week). The sushi-specific thing is more about the rawness, and the various foodborn illnesses that can come with eating undercooked or raw seafood and shellfish. Crab or Krab (fake crab) salad shouldn't be a problem for you, as long as you consider it one of your servings of fish for the week.

But basically if you wouldn't eat lunchmeat for the listeria risk, you probably shouldn't eat sushi either, for the risks there are a bit higher for the various parasites and bacteria you could get. As pointed out by other posters, flash-freezing the fish removes almost all of the parasite-related risk, and is required in the US (although obeying speed limit laws is 'required' as well, so remember that compliance to a law/regulation is up to the individual restaurant/store).

Wow! Hope that doesn't end up sounding too long winded :) Just want to share the info I've seen and heard :)

any fish high in mercery is a no no also raw fish like sushi, you can't have, shell fish you can't have either and tuna has to be limited.
at least that's what I read when I was pregnant with my son.

Raw fish in sushi is ok as long as it has been frozen before.

If you look into it actually few fish contain high levels of mercury. The ones that are high are fish that generally you wouldn't eat so much of anyway ie shark/kingfish

Again shellfish is fine if its been cooked. Most of them have low mercury levels.

Remember that even of mercury containing fish you actually have to eat a substantial amount, and consistently for it to 'possibly' have an effect. One crab salad isn't going to do you any harm

I love sushi and I miss them so much..
