What do we all mean by 'self settling'?

When I hear self settles I think you just lay them down, give them their paci or whatever they take and leave the room and they put themselves to sleep. I personally don't want my babies to self settle, I never tried to "teach" them to and now they are all toddler + that have figured it out on their own in their own time :)

My definition of self-settling is LO being put down awake and going to sleep themselves with no help or 'props' so this would include a soother or parent in the room. Sometimes Aisling self-soothes so I can literally put her down awake and leave the room and she'll chatter away or have a bit of a moan but she'll fall asleep by herself. The nights that I'm even just sitting in the room with her without even talking, I'd say she hasn't self settled.

Yep, self-settling for me is DD going to sleep without any help - whether DH and I are in the room or not.

We did no self-settling until DD was just over five months old, she solely slept on me or DH, and then lack of sleep and severe concern we'd have an accident made us look into it.

We always settled her with us in the room at the start, and that made the whole thing good.

Now she settles beautifully - and when she doesn't, she comes in with us!

That's what I always thought too really.

I would agree with this as well. I put Rebecca into her cot and will go and sit in the spare room next door for a few minutes. I tend to know pretty quickly if she's going to self settle or not. She will self settle about 60% of the time. If she's fussing I'll go into her and rock her to sleep / read her a story etc.

I've never been bothered about the self-settling thing to be honest - she's done it herself in the last month or two!

I also sit in the spare room. I just read a book and if she cries I go in and reassure her a little and leave again. Repeat x 652 if necessary!

Yep! I know how that feels :dohh:

we dont self settle but i would class it as putting the baby in crib/cot and them getting to sleep with a dummy if they take one even if i was in the same room...id love it if Ollie did do it but he just lays there awake and talks to himself even when he is literally shattered and as soon as i pick him up and cuddle him in he goes to sleep...i think ive built a rod for my own back heehee xx

This is what Lola does.......she's 8 months old  :flower:

If I could put her in her cot awake with dummy & blanket and she fell asleep I would consider it self settling. Hopefully she'll start doing it before she is 15 :haha:

Nah thats when they start trying to stay up all night listening to music or wanting to watch somthing on the tv or chatting to mates on the phone :)

I consider Harrison a self-settler as I can put him down awake (drowsy) and within a few minites he's asleep with no rocking/shhhing/patting. He does however have 'props' - a dummy and a blanket which he likes to hold onto. So not a complete self setter but this is good enough for me!
