Hi my boy is 5 weeks old and I am straggling to understand what is bothering him. I bottle-feed him.

Symptoms getting worse and worse with each week:

Reflux 3-5 times after each meal (sometimes 1-3 hours after the meal)
Explosive poo - he makes so much distressful sounds when poking, and I can hear it when it comes out. Also it smells like really bad cheese.
Smelly urine
Very unsettled
Don't sleep deeply and usually turns a lot and growls a lot ( we can't sleep) and wakes up every 30-40 min.
He has loads of gas
Red rush on his face
Doesn't like his feed as he used to and often cries when he is on bottle.

He is unhappy overall and doesn't want to play anymore.

What can it be? I am desperate!!!

:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Aww poor baby. I don't know what it is, but I'd probably call NHS direct or take him to the walk in centre or doctors just to get him checked out, and to put your mind at ease. xxx

Would definitely second the advice to speak to your GP or HV - may as well make use especially if you are worried.

It's hard to say though as it's hard with a lot of those symptoms to know how extreme they are in contrast to say another baby.

Sam became very unsettled and hard work and cried a lot from about 5 weeks. In a sense I could say most of your symptoms appplied to him but apart from the reflux he was fine. He threw up all the time though, I almost always had a muslim in my hand and we changed clothes 3+ times a day. And often it was ages after his bottle. His nappies always seemed explosive until they got firmer (after solids), he made grunting sounds when doing that and I could hear it happening ... oh and to me they smelled awful - but I think that's normal! He's never been a fab sleeper and when he was tiny he was such a noisy sleeper. We had problems with his bottle until he was about 4 months - I found playing around with the teat size helps. Some people swear by variflow (didn't work for us but you LO may be getting frustrated by the flow of the teat?). Or perhaps you should consider changing formula brand (with advice from HV)?

Does he take anything for reflux? Sam had his formula thickened with Carobel and it helped loads.

Sam never had a rash though and it can be any number of things, mostly harmless. However rash always seems to me as one of those things you shouldn't ignore as it can be a symptom of something more serious so I would definitely see you GP about that?

Did he get better? Did he became "easier"?

We have antibiotic for the rush at the moment. Looks like it helps a bit. Was told it's impetigo (?)

Your Lo sounds a lot like mine :flower:

Mine has silent reflux, carobel in his milk helps and has made feeding easier.
He was also so unsettled with colic and wind and we changed to a comfort milk that has worked wonders, much more settled and less night noises. He still has loads of wind but seems to be able to get rid of it now. And he had a red rash on his face which the GP said was infantile eczema, she prescribed Oiletum bath oil and cream and it worked almost immediantly.

I would suggest going to see your GP, as it sounds like your lo could be suffering from reflux and also a cows milk protien intolerance.

Leo was diagnosed with CMPI, when he was 12 weeks old, before that he had pretty much all of the symptoms that you've described x

Thanks. I also bought it was reflux or reaction to milk...

Feel so sorry for him. he is in so much pain...
