I'm starting to think about weaning, although I won't be doing it for a few more weeks, and was wondering what to start weaning with. I won't be able to prepare purees because my kitchen is tiny and so is my fridge freezer so I think I will have to start with jars although preferably organic ones. I've been looking at whats available and doing a bit of research and its recommended that you try to avoid smooth purees. Lo will be roughly 6 months so will it be ok to give her some lumps. The foods that have small lumps say from 7 months so can I not give her them or is that only a guide?

I want to give her finger foods as well but as I know she won't be able to eat much when feeding herself I want to give her some puree to make sure she gets some food. What finger foods do you recommend for 6 months?

Do I need to start by offering only one food at a time or is it ok to mix them?

And my last question. How much should I expect her to eat and how often? She's not a big eater anyway and tends to eat little and often. When would you offer food to start off with. Would you just offer it once say at lunch time or several times a day?

Sorry for all the questions I hope you can offer some advice.

Hi there,

I would personally give purée smooth to start with but I know there are people that don't so I guess it's personal preference.

You can give lumps, but you might find lo doesn't cope well or like the texture...I found this with lo and she wouldn't have lumpy food for a while after having smooth foods but would eat finger food, it was a bit odd!

I would offer finger foods like banana, soft fruit, carrot, sweet potato wedges to start with. Nice and soft for lo to manipulate in the mouth.

You're meant to only offer one food at a time to begin with in case of allergies, tbh I didn't know this so didn't and offered everything at the same time, but had I known I'd have only offered one just in case.

In terms of amount of food, a spoonful or two is enough to begin with to see how lo reacts then build it up. I'd try giving her tea first then add lunch

Good luck. A lot is trial and error!

If your weaning at 6 months you don't need to give foods seperatly. I would just skip purée and give LO what your eating,

My baby is 6 months and I'm giving her little bits of the textured pouches, I didn't start with them though...

Thank you. There's so many different ways of doing it. Personally I'd like to do a mix of finger foods and puree but would like to miss the completely smooth puree. I was told that was ok at 6 months but I'm confused because jars say from 7 months. I think I'll speak to my health visitor before I start weaning anyway.
