When a line isn't a line - the HPT hall of shame

Hi ladies,

I thought it would be useful for us to bunch together all the HPTs that are known for giving false positives - not through our own misuse (looking after the time limit etc) but that give genuine false positives leading to heartache.

My own vote for "worst HPT ever" is Clearblue or Sainsburys own brand +/- tests. Actually, ANY +/- test is bad. I once bulk bought a lot of these when they were on offer. All but 1 had a visible blue line within 2 minutes appear. Now, mostly the test line was thinner than the control line and this is a definite negative. Twice though, I had lines that appeared fainter but just as thick. These were still negative. I do not ovulate and there was no way they were correct. I got my husband to use one and he got the same thing. Stay away from these.

I'm going to try and add pictures to this.

If anybody has genuine false positives, please post here so we can keep people informed when they are making decisions about which tests to use.

Good idea, I got a really strong BFP last when trying for finnlay and it was a false pos.

came up virtually straight away, was heartbroken.

it was with the clearblue tests

When I was TTC no. 1 - my bad experiences / evap lines were always with clearblue and sainsburys!!! The blue ink ones and + ones just don't work for me! I am sticking to 2 line pink ink ones from now on!

Oh my Good Lord!!!! I would've jumped for the moon if I had seen this on my test!!!!! Wow...that's soooo wrong. They should have a write-up and stop selling them. That's really sad, getting people's hopes up like that. I would've really thought that was a positive.

It scares me cuz it's like, what test can you trust anymore, ya know? I hate that. I've gotten lines on the Walgreen's and Rite-aid brand, it's the blue dye one. I've gotten evaps on the EPT test, I've gotten evaps on the $ test (the U-Check) one, and even on Answer and FRER. Maybe my body just produces something that makes me get a lot of evaps lmao but I've gotten my fair share of them and they really suck!

i know i could have been a chemical and it did really mess with my head infact it was because of this i stopped coming on here for the past month it all just got too much for me. OH and me even went out and bought our first baby outfit on the strengh of that test

I actually complained to Sainsburys and got some generic response about how they would look into the issue etc....I find it so hard to believe that they would allow these to go on the market!!

oh my god i thought mine was dark but that is sooooo bad

It was devestating, I took the test just before I had to leave for a work trip and spent the whole 2 days thinking I was pregnant, then took an FRER when i got home and there was literally nothing there.....took a digi and nothing again. It's crushing and should be sorted out by the stupid people who make these tests....I was always told theres no such thing as a false positive..hmmm!!

OMG!!!! I would have been dancing round the room if i seen that!!! That looks so much like a BFP!!! they should be taken off the market!

They should!! Doesnt sound like they were too surprised by my complaint though!!

I knew blue dyes were a bit risky but never thought a result like that could be a falsey!!

Pink dye only from now on!!

I had a false positive with Target's test. Never using a blue test again!!

Jem123 - pink dye tests, especially FRER are generally the best because if they give you an evap its easy to tell it apart from a pos line because it will have no pink dye in it...whereas blue dye evaps can be as blue as they like, which makes them look like BFP's xx

Digitals are good but not as sensitive as the others which sucks cuz then you have to wait longer lol. We can never win, can we? lol
