When are they old enough to play in their own room

My 3 year old doesn't play upstairs alone, he hates to be alone. Sometimes I'll leave both boys upstairs (with a safety gate on the bedroom door) for 5 minutes while I do a whirlwind tidy up downstairs. We keep quite a few toys upstairs but almost always play all together up there.

Mine is 19 months but wouldn't want to play on her room alone as she gets upset if I'm not near. Sometimes if we are upstairs playing then she will go play in her room for a few moments but soon comes back.

Charlie has phases on and off off playing alone but he's really good at it now and spends ages making up scenarios and songs with his figures and castle :) Him and his friend are in his bedroom just now and I can hear them making up Scooby Doo stories in American accents :haha:

I have let Tabs play independently in another room from about 8 months old.
