When Did You Start to Let Your LO Use Crayons?

I noticed a bit in DS's baby book that says "first scribble" and I also saw on a friend's FB where she posted a pic of her LO colouring (and the LO is only a week or so older than DS).

I mentioned to DH that I wanted to get DS some crayons today (since he's nearly 9 mos -- next week), and DH replied, "Why? So he can EAT them?"

True, he puts nearly everything in his mouth...but it's not like I would hand him the box and leave him unsupervised. I'd like to give him one or two colours and see what he thinks.

This made me wonder when others plan to let their LO use crayons to colour and make scribbles? Or if your babes are older...when DID you let them experience this?

Ellis is 16 months and still prefers to eat them over drawing with them!! Getting him an Etch-sketch instead!!

I was wondering this too ;)

A friend of mine got these little kinda egg shape pens for her lil lad when he was quite little.. I might go take a look ;)

I should note as well that DS "draws" with his food on his tray...so this is one of the reasons I'm curious to see how he would do.

A friend of mine, who is a nanny, was allowing the eight month old that she watches to use finger paint. I thought that was a fun idea, albeit messy, so you could give that a try. Seeing as they make non-toxic finger paints it shouldn't hurt if it is ingested. I think I might even give it a try with my LO.

I was thinking about this the other day for Mika. Problem is he likes to hit things and I'm afraid he will splash the finger paint!

my LO uses jumbo pencils and loves them. shes 17months and been using them for about 2months. not tried crayons.

I thiink 7 months River had crayons. she still eats them now though.

7 months for painting to

callum did his first drawing last week with crayons, yes he kept putting them in his mouth but with encouragement he scribbled on the paper instead.

Awe! Thanks everyone for the replies!

I'm really liking the idea to use paints as well and now I'm really motivated to really get into it with DS. I'm prepared for a mess and for a colourful baby, but most of all I look forward to starting to share a love of my own with him!
