When did your toddler start naming his/her stuffed animals or dolls?

Violet's 2nd birthday was on the first of November. For her birthday she got a duplo set, a doll, and some other things. Since that time, she has named the duplo person that came with the set as well as her doll. The duplo person's name came first. The duplo person is named Holly, which is a little odd since we only know one Holly who we don't see often. She also has a reindeer stuffed animal that I named Holly, but we haven't mentioned that name in a long time. The doll, she named this evening. She gave it the name Saxophone. Also odd, but in a different way. She hasn't exactly had much exposure to saxophones and of course it's a bit of a "creative" name.

When did your kids start giving names to their dolls or stuffed animals?

She had a name for her favourite doll at 18 months, it was 'Nenem' which means 'baby' in Portuguese so it wasn't a random choice like Violet's.

Not sure about toys, but my toddler has had an imaginary friend called Batapo (unsure of spelling, haha) for about two months. No idea where that name came from.

Sophie named a doll Lulu at 19 months and a teddybear Norboo at 20 months. Thomas didn't name toys until he was 2.5ish. He named a pair of soft toy cats Precious anf Pooky.

Joni still isn't very good at naming things. She's had a teddy from birth called Brown Bear (obviously we named that), and i recently found another teddy in a cupboard, so she's called that one Brown Bear too. We bought two guinea pigs and I said she could name them but the best she could come up with was Temperature and Daddy so I ended up naming them myself. Mostly though, if she has to think of a name/word in general, for some reason she'll say "Pocogogogo" or a variation of that (Pogococo, gopopgoco etc) so for her, Temperature and Daddy was pretty much a triumph in thinking of names.

Thomas does similar and calls things a strange word if put on the spot. Something like bugleoogla. He hates being asked to name things, or state his age.

Micah has a sea horse called Sea Orse (he can say Horse but if you correct him he informs you that his NAME is Sea ORSE :haha:) most animals are called Mr/Mrs/Baby/Big/Small/colour animal, e.g. Mr Spider, Tiny Tiger, Blue Lion etc, he does have a goat called donkey
.. Which he knows is a goat but is CALLED donkey.

Not yet. Some of her toys have names, but they were either named by us (like her monkey Coco, which was OH's toy from when he was a baby) or they were mispronunciations that stuck (she has a toy sasquatch named Kickass... because that's how she pronouces sasquatch.)

The only ones she sort of named were small stuffed dogs which she named Baby Tessa (Tessa is our dog). She also differentiates between Big Elmo and Baby Elmo.

same here. my LO has an imaginary friend called Sampi...

My DD has recently named one of her dollies Ella. Before this she just used to call her dolls "boy" or "girl".

My niece is 3.5 yrs and she calls her stuffed animals after the colour they are. She has a pony called Orange, an Elephant called Purple and a puppy called "Pinky".

DS1 started naming them I guess around 2 yrs old. He has 2 stuffed animal Daisy Ducks that he became obsessed with around that age, and the little one he calls Baby Daisy, and the bigger one is Big Girl Daisy. He also has a huge stuffed animal pig that one of DH's coworkers on the farm bought him for Christmas one year, and he named it "Ham". We didn't prod him in that direction at all; I actually find it quite hilarious that it's name is so fitting.

Yes Jacob does this too, I asked what he would call a dog (because he keeps banging on about them) and he said 'wingy wangy wongy'

That is so funny! Thomas would do the exact same thing.

My LO is incredibly unimaginative with these things, she has a cat called Cat, bears are all Bear (except Henry, who I named), rabbit is Lapin (french) and all her duplo guys are "Man". She has a doll called Olivia but she couldn't pronounce that when we first got her, so she's called Lala. She can say Olivia now but her name is still Lala! As is Bagpuss, his name is still Bapoo. I guess it'll all come in time.

We bought her a pet fish and she called him Fishfish

Hmm I'm wondering if I'm preventing Charlotte's development by naming all her toys for her, or buying her Peppa Pig or In the Night Garden toys, which she already knows the name too as they are the main two tv programmes she watches. My favourite named toy has to be Crazy Bunny. We treat him like a hot potato and he's a bit crazy :) Charlotte's always shouting 'where's crazy bunny?' :haha:

Next toy I'm going to give her the chance to name it!

That is exactly what Joni would do except with pococogo or pogococo or copopogo or another variant.

I actually got really excited earlier because we saw a fish tank and she ran up yelling, "What's that fish called?!" so I said, "Why don't you think of a name for it?" and she told me it was called 'jolly' and I immediately thought how I was going to share her naming success on this thread. Then I remembered we have a goldfish called Jonny and actually she was saying Jonny. And it was pretty much identical to our goldfish. So not really the triumph I first thought. x

My LOs toys are a lot like Icklemonster's charlotte's in that they have their real names 'pooh bear', 'tigger', 'peppa' etc. Although she did name her smaller peppa 'baby peppa'. She doesn't really have anything that doesn't have a name already yet except teddies which are all 'teddy'. I've never asked her to make up a name so not sure what she'd do.

Another colour namer here so blue dog, green fish.. Etc unless they have a specific name already like iggle piglet and upsy daisy who sleep with him

Although, randomly he'll say he has a giraffe living under one arm called lizard and a lizard under the other called giraffe. I can never get them right and he always corrects me! How he remembers which is which I'll never know

Thomas doesn't do it yet. Instead we name bears and he recognises the name.

Noah doesn't pay that much attention to stuffed toys/dolls etc. He has got a rabbit which is his absolute favourite, which he takes to bed, but its only called rabbit. Apart from that he's not really interested in toys that you might name. We bought him some fish and he named those mummy and daddy. :haha:
