....to buy a pump? Should I have it on hand before LO arrives? Or should I wait until he is here?

Just curious. It is a big investment and I am a little worried about buying it and then not needing/using it.

For instance, what if I CAN'T BF for some reason. I really want to, but that is a real fear in the back of my mind. Afterall, doesn't look like I will get the birth I want either. :sad1:

I bought mine before he came. I am just getting used to it. I kind of wish I spent money on a better one. :(

i got mines before bubs arrived despite advice that its best to wait til breastfeeding is established, its not gonna hurt having it there just in case. The best one i have ever used is the medela swing electric pump, its quick, efficient and so comfortable!!

I know in the US you can borrow/rent from the hospital. Good electric pumps can be quite expensive, especially if it turns out you don't need it. I would personally if anything buy a manual one, or nothing and then when the baby gets here if you need it borrow from the hospital until you can buy your own. I used my manual one with Hayden only a few times to pump milk to use for cereal...he never had bottles so it's very possible you would never need one.

I got mine b4 as i knew i cudnt breastfeed and ive been expressing now for 10 days ...there a god send if u need a break somebody else can feed baby for u also ive found most on my last two pumps when ive sold them ive used for 4 months and sold them at not much loss xxx

You wont need to be pumping before BF is established ideally so no need to get one in advance if you dont want to. I got a bargain 2nd hand from ebay before as I didnt wanna miss out on that particular bargain.

Try to go into it with a positive attitude. Much of BFing is confidence and belief in your own body. Your body has carried your baby and done a wonderful job of feeding and nurturing it so far so why would it stop providing for it when it's born? It's not always easy but if you try not to doubt yourself then you will be successful!

:)

A couple of these posts has made me wonder -- is buying a used pump from some place like Ebay a safe bet?

I'm not sure if you maybe mean where I put borrowing from the hospital which would obviously be used, too. They give you brand new/sterile things, the only part really being reused is the actual pump, the tubing and all that is all new

i got mine beforehand, a manual one, and im glad i did as it is what put me into labour :p

i have since bought a better one though

x

Yeah, that is what I meant -- guess it is a silly question! :dohh: Just seemed like something that was worth buying new, but now I don't know why I thought that! I will have to look at Ebay! (Don't think our hospital rents them. :( )

About used single-user pumps:
https://www.breastfeedingonline.com/pumps.shtml

Different pumps suit different people, so I'd wait until you know what you need from a pump.

I had a manual emergency one which lasted me fine until I could buy an electric one when BF'ing didn't work. We didn't managed to get over the hump, so I'm renting a jospital grade pump.

Boots are open every day if you run into problems and need to buy a pump.

Chances are you won't need one though!

Sorry about your birth plans. I didn't get the birth I hoped for, which upset me at the time, but 8 weeks later I barely think about it. (Trauatic induced labour, baby got distressed and I pushed him out while being prepped for c-section)

Sorry you didn't get the birth you wanted either, asacia. My LO is so big that the docs are insisting on a planned c-section for me. I had been hoping for natural with now drugs! Quite the opposite!
