i was just wondering when can you start weaning? Some people say wait until 6 moths corrected whilst on the bliss sight is says 5 -7 months, actual age not corrected. Obviously this is quite different. I tried my baby on baby rice today and he loved it! He is 5 month, 8 weeks corrected.

Hello :)

You go by their actual age when weaning a preemie, so Sophie was born in March last year at 27 weeks and we started weaning her at the end of August/beginning of September - much to the disgust of our health visitor!

xx

Elias started eating solids around 7 months.

thanks guys, i have no idea about weaning. I hoped i could start soon, although i will continue to breastfeed he is so interested in food, even tries to munch on toast! i just worry cause he is only 9lb, but holds his head up well etc

If he is interested in food, I would try a little bit (baby rice cereal or baby oatmeal perhaps). As soon as Elias started showing interest in food, I began feeding it to him (he's still breastfeeding as well, and I will continue to do so until he's ready to wean -- which I doubt will be ANY time soon!). I have a little piggy on my hand now. I swear I've never seen a baby want to eat food as much as he does. :haha:

I asked today and was told I can't wean for another 4-6 weeks. SCBU doc said because our little ones were born soooo early that the advice varies from premmie to premmie. A prem can still be 3 weeks early whereas ours were 11 weeks so it's slightly longer for us to wait...I'm tempted to try now but going to go by what our particular doc says but they all seem to differ in opinion!!

its just so frustrating, every time we have a meal he screams cause he can smell it. He grabs at food and when i gave a little baby rice he was grabbing my hand to get the spoon in his mouth quicker. im just so worried about doing the wrong thing

Leo was a couple of days over 6 months actual age. I think people were secretly horrified! But I'm so glad I went with my instinct, after a shaky start (due to illness) he's seriously the BEST eater now! Not fussy at all!

We started weaning our two three weeks ago when they were 5 1/2 months actual, 3 months corrected.

They were really really interested in food and Ethan would cry if he saw you eating anything. So I just tried them on a bit of baby rice for a few days and decided that if they took to it well then we would carry on, if not then we would stop and wait a few weeks and try again.

Well, they have loved it, they are now on fruit/veg purees twice a day and can't get enough of it. So I am very happy with our decision.

I did check with our SCBU doctor and he was happy for us to start, I have not told the HV though as I know what the response will be!

HV haven't a clue about premmies. I wish they would keep their opinions to themselves! SCBU docs clearly know a lot more about them and specialise in it so it drives me nuts when HV give you that look of disapproval!!

I started at just over 5 months actual and had no issues. Our consultant was happy with starting when we did and he pretty much eats what we eat now although mashed up!

we went for 11/12 weeks corrected. Seemed more comfortable.

i will be starting fred on solids sometime this month if he wants it and he will be 5months actual in a few days. his consultant advised us to do that. that said, stupid HV rang to tell me her opinion which was to wean him at 5months corrected which would make him 8 months actual, so i didnt listen to her and when she asked me if i wanted her to come round i said "no thanks"!

I started giving puree's at 6 months actual age and it went fine :flow:

I was told to start at 6 months actual and did. This is around four months corrected. My question is: the book I am following says that some foods are good to give to a baby less than six months and some after six months. I know I had to start solids based on actual age because my babies needs the iron, being a preemie.... but are their digestive systems really that of four month olds? Should I only be giving rice cereal, banana, avocado and sweet potato? I have given these things one at a time with three to four days between each new thing. Then, I gave some mild fruits that I had steamed to make more digestible, like pears and peaches... I want to give vegetables. I started with carrots today. Do you all think it is ok to keep introducing veggies, even though the book says they are harder to digest and for older babies?

I gave all fruit & veg when I started weaning but I didn't introduce dairy or meat until 6 months corrected.

i have started now and he loves it! i give fruit and veg, he loves bananas and wud eat a whole one if allowed. its so much better at meal times, cause he always wanted my food, now he has his own when we have ours. He even started cooing today when i had an orange squash! In the end after he had dived towards mine and stuck his hands in it he had a bottle of squash and wudnt let me have it until he had finished it! He sleeps better and settles well. Mikey LOVES food!
