Where can I go to find out if I'm entitled to any government benefits?

I'm getting myself in a tizzy about how my husband and I are going to manage financially when our baby arrives. I've looked several times on the usual websites about benefits and tried working out if I'd get anything but I just end up getting confused (not difficult as brain is now mush!!). I only get 6 weeks full pay from work then get SMP, which will have my monthly income.
Do you get taxed on SMP?
Also, my husband is on a very low salary, but it is topped up through a dividend each month. Does anyone know if we have to declare this when applying for benefits?
Part of me wants to forget about it all until the baby arrives, but on the other hand, I'm stressing about it
Hope someone out there can help!!

entitledto.co.uk

not sure about the taxes. you should get tax credits and of course child benefit. xx

You do get taxed on SMP but most people get a tax free amount each year which means that the majority of SMP falls into the tax free amount so I pay around 40 worth of tax on the 580.

the citizen's advice office (CAB) will be able to help in person if you go with your and your other half's salary and other income details.
You will prob have to declare the dividend as it's classed as income

good luck

entitledto.com is good, but if you would rather speak to someone face to face, citizens advice would be best x

You should definitely apply for tax credits, I did and was amazed what you are entitled to. Am on mat leave and earn a decent salary but my OH doesn't. We applieed for tax credits and were pleasantly surprised at what we could get. YOu must declare everything...
