Which milk have you found best for a sensitive tummy?

Hi all, hope you had a lovely Christmas! :happydance: My little girl has been suffering with 'colic' for weeks now and we have been trying everything. We changed from Aptamil 1 to comfort milk which made a big difference but she is still in agony at times with terrible tummy pain and awful wind. We tried colief but the doctor advised me to take her off it as I didn't think it was making much of a difference and I guess we need to know what the next step is milk wise.

Anyhow, basically because the comfort is reduced lactose and then the fact that I was adding colief meant that her milk had very little lactose in it, so I am now not convinced lactose is the problem and this was the next thing we were going to try...

I was wondering if anyones LO just has a really sensitive tummy then which milk was the best to use...did you buy it in the shops or are there any good ones on prescription that I could discuss with the doctor...do you think I should still try completely lactose free??

The doctor is seeing us again this week, he wouldn't prescribe lactose free milk until we came off the colief. We also have been given infant gavisgon for suspected silent reflux, I think these have helped at night time, she doesn't seem to struggle as much with her milk repeating on her in the day.

Sorry to ramble x

Here - gentle means broken down - Sensitive means reduce or lactose free. I would go with one with broken down proteins. It's very rarely a lactose thing but an altogether milk thing - I'd go gentle and then Hypoallergenic.

my 6 weeks old daughter had the same problem but i switch her on aptamill comfort which made a big different now she can sleep for long at night and she doesn't cry the way she used to. i think you should stick to aptamill comfort

How long was you LO on the comfort before you saw a big difference? We have been on it 2 weeks now x

she is on comfort for 2 weeks now and at first she did not seem to like the milk even now she still does not like it but i saw a big different on day 5 till now everthing is fine she has no problem with colid .

comfort milk can take up to 2weeks to make a difference. Personally i would stick with the comfort and try adding 5ml of gripe water into 6bottles a day. Also, how are you making the milk? Because comfort NEEDS to be made with hot water (not too hot obviously, otherwise you destroy the milk). If the water is too cold it doesnt mix and 'activate' x

I've nothing further to add re formula types, but have you tried some different bottles? If LO is taking in loads of wind when drinking that certainly won't help. Try Dr Browns if you're not already.

I'm watching this post with interest as my little girl Freya (7 1/2 weeks) is also suffering from terrible 'colic'. I've tried pretty much everything: she was on C&G stage 1 ready made so switched to comfort but didnt give it long enough, switched to aptimil and have now been back on C&G comfort for a couple of days. We've used infacol, gripe water, dentinox, colief, fennel tea, Biogaia probiotic drops, visited a cranial osteopath (2 sessions down = nothing), done baby massage/movements, warm baths (these help whilst she is in it only). I've ordered some of those Hylands homeopathy tablets as well. We are desperate with it and, as she is a twin, it is even harder to cope. I've got a Drs appt. on Wednesday as I just need to go for peace of mind to make sure that there is nothing else wrong. I do think it is colic though as it started bang on 3 weeks, was particularly bad between 7-10pm at first, seemingly has peaked between 6-8 weeks (I hope - it can't get any worse!) and is now throughout the day too.
:-(
Xxx

Thanks everyone, I premake bottles but always use water exactly 30 mins off the boil so it should be ok. I have tried infacol, dentinox, gripe (but not in the bottles) swings, vibrating chairs, swaddling, baths, the hoover, white noise CD and massage... it's the most full time, full time job I have ever had!! She is using Gavisgon at the moment for the reflux although I am not happy about it as we are using comfort milk and it shouldn't be used together, I did tell the doctor this more than once at the appointment and he said it would be fine, the instructions say it shouldn't be done so it doesn't sit comfortably with me. I checked with the chemist and she said give it to her as you would a breast fed baby.

I will try the gripe in the bottles, I will try anything  The whole thing is really heartbreaking. Like you Helen ours started at around 3-4 weeks, seemed to hit a peak at 6-8 and please God she is a little better, but still suffering terribly. Its' so awful to wish the time with your baby away, but I just want her to be 3-4 months with this behind her.:nope:

Oh and I use DR Brown bottles after trying many others, she likes the teat on these the best :baby:

We switched to Aptamil comfort a week ago and it helped but we were still getting the screaming/squirming for an hour or so at night. We started adding the gripe water to bottles yesterday and she is soo much more settled and finishing her bottles now. She also has the Dr Brown bottles (thanks for the advice on the teats!) Hope it works for you both. x

I feel the same as you noree - it is heartbreaking to see them in pain and I agree, wishing time away is awful but it can't be helped. For most of the day Freya is not a happy baby. Before 3 weeks she was so content and easygoing but now when she smilesand coos its shortlived and we can see the pain overtake her and she writhes around and cries. I'm also worried about her milestones as she can't hold her head up as well as her twin brother and just not as interested in toys etc as him(as much as they are at 7 weeks!) she screams when i attempt tummy time too. It's hard not to compare especially when she was streets ahead of him at first as he was in SCBU for 11 days.
I'm also using Dr Brown's! We'll do anything won't we?
X

I have spoke to cow and gate and the ped we see for Harrisons reflux, you can put the gaviscon in with comfort milk as it DOESNT contain a thickner, but only use 1. Even if your baby is over the weight thing IYKWIM? x

Hi Bathbabe, my baby is on Aptamil comfort and I think that has got a thickener. Feel unsure about what to so, don't want to change the milk because she is better on it but also don't want to stop gavisgon because it's helping, especially at night where her reflux really causes the most trouble.

& yes Helen it's so mad but we will try anything!! I feel so sorry for you it must be so so hard with twins, but it will end and I am sure your little girl will be fine and will reach all of her milestones, it will not make any difference in the long run, I guess the thing is you have another baby to compare against and then it ends up making you worried, but don't, Kitty screams her head off at tummy time and as for smiles, well I nearly fell out with my mum who has been on smile watch over the last few weeks commenting on how she doesn't smile alot... basically she doesn't smile because she is miserbale with a terrbile tummy pain, she smiles when she is feeling ok which isn't that often, and when she is feeling better she will smile all the time and so will your little darling, don't worry x

Maybe I should attempt the change to cow and gate comfort...just worried about upsetting her tummy more.

its safe to use with aptamil as well, iv spoken to them, its a thicker feed but doesnt contain a thickener x

Thank you Bathbabe, that has made me feel so much better!! :happydance:

Bathbabe is it ok to put the gripe and the gavisgon in the bottle together?
Also when you premake do you add the gaviscon then or do you add it as your LO takes each feed? I mixed them seperate last night and added it into the feed when she needed the bottle. Would be so much easier if it could be added as I was making up the milk, less messing around x

this is how i make my bottles.. Wait 30mins for kettle, make bottles, add gripe water, rapid cool, fridge, heat, add gaviscon when needed, really good shake, feed. X
