Who has had success with first cycle IVF?

Hi, I'm trying to find out how often IVF works on the first cycle. I know it depends a lot on different factors, so these are mine: I'm almost 30 years old, and after TTC for three years I had a lap and dye test to find out that I have PID and my tubes are probably too badly damaged to conceive naturally. IVF seems to be the only way we will have a baby, and we don't have insurance that covers this. It will probably be a year or two before we've saved up for the procedure, but I'm terribly afraid it won't work on the first try and the money will be wasted.
Has anyone with tubal factor infertility conceived with IVF the first try?

If your tubes have been damaged by PID (called hydrosalpinx)- it is best for them to be removed before doing ivf - because there is often residual infection that will kill embryos. I went for a lap surgery to have my tubes removed and they ended up finding that they were not infected but had cysts sitting on them that were fluid filled.

Best wishes :hugs:

Oh, Blue12, that's kind of rotten news. Thanks for the information though. I'd never even considered that. Do you think that the IVF clinic would check this out or should I talk to my OB/GYN about it? I haven't even consulted with a fertlity specialist, because after by OB did bloodwork to make sure those levels were normal, DH did SA, and then my Lap and Dye uncovered the problem, I just figured we would need to save up $10,000.00 before I even talked to them. My OB/GYN just told me that my tubes were open and we should continue to try naturally, but he really thought that we would need to bypass my tubes to get pregnant.
Sorry this is all so long, it's just nice to get the details out to somebody. I haven't shared my TTC journey with any family or friends.

Hun if you have had a lap and they didn't think you needed them removed then it should be fine. I would see if you can talk with the doc who did your lap to confirm there isn't a residual infection. Did they ever make you take any meds for the PID?

I know that an ivf clinic will go ahead with you (because they want the money). I just know that my clinic told me that I needed the lap to check things out first because she didn't want me to waste my money, but that with ivf you still have a chance it is just significantly reduced.

On the otherhand maybe everything is "fine" now with your tubes - so that you can go ahead with ivf. I am just finally having my ivf now, I had PID, and they left my tubes behind and figure that it is okay. (Truth be told I am quite nervous right now that my ivf might not work due to that - but they seem to think it is okay).

Sorry to send bad news like this - but hopefully I am wrong and that you will have your good news soon. Do you have a journal started?

Millions of :hugs:

Hi ga_girl.

You have about a 35% chance of getting pregnant with 1 round of IVF - and this rises to 85% after three rounds - as just like regular baby making methods, it really is a cumulative chance thing.

Sorry, that's probably not the news you wanted to hear, but it seems to be about the same % on multiple different clinics' websites.

Hopefully (if need be) you'd be in a position to freeze embryo's too, and the replacement of any frozen embryos is relatively cheap (in the big scheme of IVF costs), and sometimes is included in the original cost.

I wanted to sprinkle a little positve dust around here.

We have tubal issues (blocked tubes) and we were very lucky to conceive with our first cycle of IVF.

So miracles do happen sweetie, wishing you best of luck.

My issue wasnt my tubes, rather endo and cysts and we had 2 goes. 1st being a success but ended in mc and lucky enough that our 2nd one also a success.

As NeyNey said miracles do happen please dont lose hope.

im with dilek and ney ney, although im only 5w5d my issue is pcos however my first ivf worked too. Miracles can happen hun fingers crossed for you.

ga-girl,
Hey hun I am in the same boat except both of my tubes were removed due to damage from PID which has caused 3 ectopics. Nothing is ever guaranteed but my dr said that because my tubes were my only issue I should definetly be a good canidate for IVF to work. I also have to come up with the money to pay for it as insurance wont cover it and am terrified I will spend all that money and it not be successful. Best of luck hun.

I'm not saying it's not possible, I was answering the OP's question. For every one woman it works for first time, there are two women for whom it doesn't. I love reading about all the 1st time successes, as it gives me hope, I just know it might not happen first time for me.

Agreed - I know miracles happen and some people get first time lucky - I don't mean to be sounding positive. I had a very "similar" situation with my tubes - and the infectious fluid will wipe out a viable pg - so I just wanted to warrant not spending the money on ivf before making sure. I have read at least 3 stories of people who went on to have 7 or more ivfs and found out after 5 that they had the infected tubes and got them removed and then got pg with ivf no problem.

Best wishes and here's hoping we are all the first time successful people!

Oh girls I wasn't having a go at you at all :hugs:

i just wanted to share a positive story that's all...

Sorry if you thought I was directing anything at you girls for posting, that wasn't the case at all...far from it...I'm cheering you all on from the sidelines :hugs:

Hi.
I lost my 2nd tube due to ectopic last night so IVF is the only way forward for us now.
We are hoping to start it in 12-18mths. I am not ready now after enduring 2 ectopics within 6mths. I just wanted to say to the girl with tubal issues- Get them removed before starting IVF. If u have scar tissue/infection in your tubes, you are high risk for ectopic and having IVF increases the risk. Good luck to u all and i hope to see you around here in a few mths time when i feel ready to look to the future xxx
