I had my midwife appointment yesterday where she offered Me the whopping cough immunisation. I didn't get it with my son as it wasnt offered then but the midwife advised it as it offers baby protection until their immunisations as there have been recent cases where babies have been infected before they have had their immunisations and had died.

I agreed to have it, although I was a bit apprehensive as I wasn't prepared and would usually like to research the risks involved etc.

So are you having it done? If not, why not?

I will be! OH has had whooping cough twice, once as a child and again as an adult just a few years ago. We've had it go around recently as well. I'm of the mind that any amount of protection is good, even if it isn't prevention.

I'll be having it. I work at a boarding college and we've had cases of it this year.

I'll be getting it. My mum had it as a child & she has suffered badly with coughs ever since. As the slightest hint of a cold she gets an awful cough that lasts a good couple of months. She has had numerous test to check for lung diseases but it always comes back to the whooping cough she had as a child.

I think I'd rather have it than not.

I know what you mean tho about researching it. I decided against the flu vaccine.

I'm going to have it as well. Too many babies getting seriously sick. I'd rather be safe than sorry...

I had it last pregnancy and will be getting it this pregnancy. We also asked our family members to get it too.

Usually it isnt recommended until the third trimester though.

No I won't and did not get it. My OB is very against it and it isn't even offered where I am. ( Canada) they don't vaccinate pregnant women xx

I'll be getting It id hate baby to be poorly and know I could have prevented it. I think mw said 34 weeks onwards x

I got it, and had everyone who will be caring for little man to get it too. Better to try to safe my baby and it doesn't hurt adults to get a little shot ;)

Definitely don't get it until 3rd tri tho...hopefully your doc was just giving a heads up, but it's pointless until around 34 weeks as it stays in your system for only so long or something. There's a range you need to get it in

And this is why whooping cough is the second most commonly contracted infectious disease in Canada, after Influenza. 80% of those who contract whooping cough are infants under 3 months old.

Got it and they checked dh records to see when he got it and it was a few years ago.

Cowgirl- even if you or OH had it recently you still need to get it with each pregnancy as it's for that particular baby's first 2 months of life until baby gets their own vaccines :) at least that's my understanding

I got mine last appt. dh was within the last two years so he didn't need it (according to the dr) and insurance won't cover. My daycare lady had it last fall, my parents both in the last 4 years. :) I meant I've gotten mine already.

Yes your OH won't need it again. Only mums need it to pass on the immunity to the baby :)

Apparently the NHS have changed their guidelines from third trimester to anytime after 20 weeks as it gives more time to build antibodies and pass to baby. that is why I got mine at 21 weeks.

I got it with my last pregnancy (wasn't offered it with my first). Not sure if that will carry over to this one since it's not that far apart, but if they offer it again, I'll get it again.

I just had a bub in September and am having another in September this year and need to get it again :flower:

Not at all actually. Of all the hundreds of women I know who delivered not one baby contracted pertussis. It's a very personal decision and I for one do not believe in vaccinations during pregnancy and neither to any Drs I know including maternal fetal specialists. Baby gets pertussis vaccine here at 8 weeks. Furthermore it isn't as common as we are made to think it is. There's a whole pharma perspective regarding this vaccine during pregnancy and it has not been sufficiently studied on babies in utero.

Furthermore if you research you will see that most cases of pertussis contracted in newborns were from those who were vaccinated.

I got it, I hate needles but wanted to be on the safe side.
