Will temping work for me?

Hi! :)

First cycle ttc, and looking ahead if this one is out. I'm still hopeful but trying to be as realistic as possible.

I get up constantly in the middle of the night- some nights more than others. First of all, I'm a really light sleeper (now, I just need a LO!). But I've done this my entire life that I can recall and I'm not tired because of it, it's just normal for me.

I probably have time periods where I sleep for at least 3 hours straight, which is what is needed for taking BBT, but I can't guarantee I will sleep for the same three hours...if that makes sense? I might get up at 2 AM, 5 AM, and 6 AM one night, and the next it might be 3 AM and 6 AM. Every night is different, some nights it will work and others it will not.

If I can make BBT work, I would want to take my temp at 6 AM because that is the time DH gets up for work and I always wake up when he does. That is the only time I *might* be able to make work, I just can't guarantee I will be asleep from 3-6 every morning.

Any advice? Could I do it anyway, and it will be "close enough"?

What time do you go to bed? You can always just take your temp after at least 3 hours of sleep even if it is 3am, just keep the BBT at the bedside, rollover take your temp, then look at it later. Get the kind that shows you your last temp when you turn it on, that way your not fiddling trying to see the temp, when you take it at 3am.
I would give it a shot, you have nothing to loose, you can get a BBT for under $10 on Amazon, or Walgreens. Sign up with Fertility friend if Af shows as they give you a free 30 day trial, so if she shows you can begin temping then and get the full 30 days and a fresh start.

Thanks hun, I thought it had to be the same 3 hours every night! Im
Definitely gonna try it!

I know it is recommended that you take your temp at the same time every day, with at least 3 hours sleep and as soon as you wake. I'm not always able to do this and although my charts look a little more spiky than they should it still always picks up my O without an issue, so I'd say just give it a go and see what happens! ;)

Good luck and lots of baby dust x

Thanks hun! I guess it couldn't hurt!!

I would just try it for a month taking your temp at 6am no matter when you get up if you just wake up and go back to sleep it dosnt matter as you have gone back to sleep. You should still see a patern

As long as you get at least 3 hours of sleep you'll be fine. If you wake up a few times during the night it shouldn't effect your temp too much if you sleep for another hour or so. Just be sure to temp at the same time every morning as soon as you wake up (before getting up or even speaking). I'd give it a shot :) xx

I've been temping since March (was TTC, now WTT until wedding is over). I wake up throughout the night all the time and it hasn't affected my ability to temp. I generally get up an hour or two before I temp because I have to pee, but I don't stay up for more that a few minutes. If you wake up but go back to sleep pretty quick, it really shouldn't be an issue. If you get up and start moving around a lot though, that will raise your temp.

Oh, and from everything I've read, it's better to temp at the same time everyday, even if there are variations in your sleep pattern, than temp at different times.

Okay, I think I'll stick to the 6 am temping and hope my crazy sleep patterns don't effect anything. Thanks so much for all the advice! I'm excited about getting started next cycle if this cycle is out, I'm hating all the uncertainty about when I ovulated!

Good luck hun! Make sure you sign up for an online chart! It makes it easier to share your chart on the boards if you have questions. FertilityFriend is awesome (see link in my signature).

Just make sure you pick up an actual BBT thermometer from Walgreens or wherever. Regular thermometers don't work worth a darn and you'll just end up completely confused.

Oh! and whether or not you've O'd this cycle, you can start temping now. It won't really tell you anything yet, since you don't have anything to compare it to, but looking back it will. I started temping mid-cycle simply because I was excited. :winkwink:

Lots of :dust: to ya!

I don't know if you know this or not, but the walgreens and walmart BBTs are faulty!! Best to stay away from those hun. The two BBTs I know that are great are the BD basal body thermometer *can buy online* and the CVS brand bbt that's purple. I use the CVS one and I love love love it. Never had any problems with it and it's lasted about 6-7 months of everyday use. I've heard basically nothing but good reviews from other people as well. The BD brand is apparently the best but I have not tried it :flow: xx

Weird! I got mine at Walgreens and it's been doing fine for the last 6 months, but maybe I got one from a good batch and not everyone has? I may look into picking up a second one (from CVS or online) and compare them next cycle. Thanks for the tip!

Maybe there's two from walgreens? All I know is I've heard the pink and white ones are faulty as they give repeat temps. Maybe yours is a different one? If it's working for you then I don't think theres really a reason to switch :flower: xx

Ya know, I did notice that it does that occasionally... but it hasn't affected my chart so I figured I was probably just having similar temperatures. It always notices the big spikes and dips... but I think I'll grab a CVS one just to be safe! It would be a neat experiment anyway. :haha:

There's a thread going around about faulty bbts.. I'll have to search for it for you! xx
