Wits end with eczema

Popping in even though I have a 2.5 year old! She really had terrible eczema as a baby. So awful but she grew out of it - like literally one day it was better, the next day it was nearly gone, and then the third day it had disappeared. Haven't seen it since! She was properly over it by 9 months I'd say! Just keep him moisturized and that's about all you can do :hugs: it will pass!

My son's only symptom of his milk allergy was eczema. I was bf but the rash only really started appearing from around 3 months and gradually got worse. But he had no vomoting or anything else like that so the drs reasoning about there being no other symptoms is inaccurate.

I found out it was an allergy when I started weaning and he had a bad reaction to porridge. His eczema went after stopping all dairy.

Worth a try to cancel it out, though bear in mind it can take 2 weeks for all dairy to leave his system so wait this long before reintroducing

Thanks girls
Well the dr gave us a different steroid and double base and his face as been fine it's gone on his body and his face has little flare ups but there not to bad so I'm hoping we have it under control X

Eczema often has a dietary cause. Trigger foods could be dairy, all grains but especially gluten containing grains (rice and corn are grains), legumes, sugars, starches etc.
Sometimes a fungal problem exists along with eczema and the severity can be reduced with antifungal cream which is much more gentle than steroids (clotrimazole based antifungals are best)

This is a great article about the root cause of eczema:

Oh my doctor said less than 10% of childhood eczema is allergy based and less than 10% of those allergies are food based.

Well his certainly couldn't be from any food allergy as he hasn't even been weaned when it started
My dr also said its normally just plain eczema not caused by an allergy intact I read an allergy doesn't cause ecZema but eczema can cause allergies x

I'm not sure most doctors understand much about allergies to be honest. It can be really hard to get MPA diagnosed even though it is so common.

Both mine reacted to what I ate through breast milk. And some babies are alergic to formula so it is possible to have food allergies before weaning.

Really glad he is doing better.

Oh ino it's possible to have a milk allergy before weaning my Second son did he had a diary allergy I just ment it couldn't be any other allergy to good as he had none lolX

I didn't read the whole thread, so I don't know if others have suggested these things, but I have lived with eczema my whole life and I have a few things you can try.

1) Change whatever detergent you are using. Even if its hypoallergenic. A lot of things that are marketed as hypoallergenic still trigger my eczema, probably because it's not an allergy.

2) If you are using any lotions or creams, stop. Even if its not where the rash is, it can still trigger the rash. Again, even if they are hypoallergenic, the lotions can still affect it.

3) The creams that the doctors prescribe never really worked until they started prescribing the heavy duty stuff, which worked really well but also burned like crazy. Something that works as well, at least on me, is coconut oil. Its easily spreadable, so you don't need that much, but its safe and natural and works, at least for me.

4) Try to keep him from sweating too much. Sweat is probably the number 1 thing that starts things up.

5) Try to keep his skin moisturized, especially after bathing. My skin gets itchy if I don't put lotion on almost immediately after my shower.

6) Eczema is a never ending battle and you're doing exactly what you're supposed to. A lot of kids grow out of it and though I never did, it was worse in my childhood. But you learn to live with it. And you, as the parent, are doing a great job. Eczema is tricky and something that works for a while may suddenly stop. It can be extremely frustrating, but just know that its not permanent. :D

Like a PP said it could be something the mother eats while nursing. Later many babys have problems with cereals.

There is a disagreement between mainstream medicine and naturopaths so to say ;)
Some foods have shown to cause inflammation rather than an allergy and it can be difficult to test for it.
