Would you use the same name as your pet?

A few years ago we got a rabbit and named him Noah because we liked it, never thinking ahead to when we had children! :dohh: It actually turns out 'he' is a 'she' too, so I wish we had changed the name.
It's a name I still love but (we still have the rabbit) it's the rabbits name?! Would you personally use it still?

I wouldn't use a living or recent pets name personally. I'm planning to use the name Eric if this LO is a boy and I did have a pet guinea pig named Eric, but it was when I was little and OH didn't meet the guinea pig.

I personally wouldn't. A member of your family, even though it is a pet, already has the name.

I wouldn't but my pets all have 'pet' names... no one names their baby Diablo or Turbo lol

No. A rabbit is kind of different as it wont be with you for too long, so if you're really super keen on it for a child and think you could adapt, maybe. We have cats called Sebastian (Sebby) Viola and Perdita (Perdi), ruling all those names out as they're kittens and could live for 20 years.

I disagree with everyone here...I'd just change the rabbits name - I'm sure it's a lot easier to do that in the long run as opposed to living with regret of not being able to use the name you love for your child.
I also personally wouldn't consider a rabbit "part of the family", but to each's own  (No offense intended :flower:) I had plenty of rabbits, chickens, lizards, etc. as pets but wouldn't consider them family. My dog and cats on the other hand are different to me (not sure why though!)

I would still use the name, if you love it... and if it doesn't feel weird. I had a bunny as a kid... it had a name... but we almost always called it "the bunny." I mean do all your friends/relatives even know the bunny's name??

Maybe start calling the bunny Noelle or Norah, since it's a girl anyhow. And then use the name Noah for your baby, since you both like it.

My parents had a dog named Alayna for 12 years, named by me bc I loved the name. But I would still name a future baby Alaina!

This!

And it will make a funny story about how he got his name to tell him when he's older.

'you where named after a female rabbit that died before you could probably even remember it' - maybe we have different funny bones but I dont find anything in this story particularly humorous

I also find the rabbits are not part of the family thing weird, I personally dont like rabbits but my family had one for 10 years and where distraught and completely heart broken when it died, it was just as much family as the dog (who thought it was a puppy anyway) - ill never understand why people get a pet if they dont really care about it

changing the rabbits name could work as she is now female if its not to weird to you (guess it depends on how long you been calling her Noah) or you could give the rabbit a middle name and then slowly switch to calling her that

ideas:

Nolani
Nolene
Nolia
Nola
Nova

Noah May - May
Noah Jane - Jane
Noah Lily - Lily

I think if you can slightly change the name Noah and Nova sound adorable together

I thought more the "we stole your name from the rabbit and changed its name so you could have it" was a bit more interesting then "we found it in a book" or "we just liked it"

Does the rabbit answer to the name?
...maybe you could even just alter the name of the rabbit to something that sounds familiar that way it's no longer the same name. Like Noel, or whatever you happen to think is a good alternate.
I think changing the pet's name would be easier if you're really set on it for a baby.

This made me giggle:haha:

Since the rabbit's a she anyways you could do as others suggested and change the rabbit's name to something similar to Noah but girly then give baby Noah's name since both you and DH love it.

And yes "We changed the rabbits name so you could have it" I find hilarious, and I'm sure LO will too once he's older, like high school or getting married. Those embarrassing stories always creep up:haha:

I think is hilarious! I would change the rabbits name though. Good thing it's a girl so you have an excuse.

And I have had rabbits but I never had the same feelings towards them as my dogs or the goats or even the ducks we raise and ate. Brutal I know but I really only consider the dogs and cats part of the family (oh and the old goats).

Exactly as pp said. My dh was named after s hamster! His parents' hamster was called Benjamin and they liked the name so when he was born, that was his name xx

I wouldn't do it unless it was the only name we really really loved. But it's hardly the worst naming thing you could do, you know? And I think a rabbit is less likely to know its name than some other animals. It would be nothing but trouble in our house if we named a baby Clementine after our dog!

Well my cat us called diesel buddy-bear so I don't think I would but I love the name Noah!

I wouldn't, it's weird to me, but I wouldn't really scoff at anyone who did it.

All of my pets have people names which I love (Toby, Theo, Oskar), but I really wouldn't even consider naming a future kid any of those names. Oskar is a hedgehog, so I'm sure people would think I'm crazy for crossing that name off my list just because of a hedgehog... but it's his name, he's a part of our family, and even if he dies before I have another kid, it would feel wrong to me to give that name to someone/something else. I am admittedly quite a sentimental sap, however. ;)

Honestly I can't quite get my head around the responses in here..

Yes your rabbit has the name and yes she is a pet which is classed as part of the family but my goodness?! Your child is clearly going to be a million times more important than any pet no matter how much you adore them and you only get one chance to name your child. If you love the name then I would absolutely go for it without giving it a second thought. We had a dog called Max for 15 years before he passed away last year and in a heartbeat I would use the name Max for my 2nd but OH doesn't like the name!

Honestly I find it a little bit ridiculous that if someone has their heart set on a name they shouldn't use it because it's their rabbits name!!

Do what your heart tells you hun x

I'd still use the name, and probably change the rabbit's name! It's clearly a name you love, so why not? Or even use both names. Not a huge deal! And sure, tell LO he was named after your pet rabbit - I think it's rather cute. :)

We had a dog named Maya, and when looking at names for DD, BF really liked it. I couldn't get past the name though, all I could think of when I pictured "Maya" was a goofy golden retriever, not a baby. :haha:
