Hi All,

I had my 12 week scan last week which showed the nuchal fold to be 1.8mm. I understand this is a good result and within the right limits,

However I had the Downs Blood test along side it and the results have come back today as 1 in 84 chance of having a child with Downs.

As you can imagine, I'm totally shocked and upset.

Has anyone else been through the same and had a perfectly healthy child..... I'm dreading the results of my CVS that I have got to have on Friday.

Any help or support would be great appreciated...

xxxxxxx

Haven't been there myself, but have heard stories of people who have had even higher odds (1:10) and bub was fine. It's just giving you a risk for Downs, there's still 83 in 84 chance that bub is perfectly fine, which is almost 99%.

Wishing you well for Friday and try not to worry until you get the CVS results x

That's only a 1.2% chance of having a baby with downs! It's still such a low chance!

You have a 98.8% chance of having a perfectly normal and healthy baby, those are really good odds if you ask me :)

hi hun,

I agree with the previoius posters you are looking at one in every 84 babies thats still good odds.

my babies nuchal fold measurement was 1.7 so very near yours and theres nothing wrong

try to stay positive.

Thank you ladies, for giving a bit more reassurance. I spoke with ARC helpline this morning who answer questions relating to diagnostic tests. They say it can be something as silly as your hormones that can push the result the wrong way. Must have been feeling a bit emotional the day I had the blood test. Anyway, I'm remaining positive that everything is fine and that this is just a precaution. Like you ladies say, 98.8 chance everything is OK and that is what I have to keep in my mind. This little one is so wanted and loved already.... it's hard when you get news like this xxxxx
Forgot to say I'm 35 and this is my first...

Please all keep your fingers crossed for me that everything is OK xxx

Im 34 and this is my first baby so I havent been there myself but we opted out of all the tests for Downs.
The midwife told us the tests are only 60% accurate and can also be false positive. As we wanted the baby whether it had Downs or not we felt it best not to worry ourselves.
I hope things go well for you. x

I was told the very same thing this morning that false positives can happen alot and was even told it could be down to my hormones that day. I have an underactive thyroid so think possibly that may have had something to do with it. Babies nuchal fold was normal at 1.9mm and within low risk indicators. Just hoping all is OK xxxx

I'm not sure who it was on here, but I remember reading about a girl who had gone for the regular doctor's tests AND had a private test done as well. The private test was very thorough and detailed and they gave VERY different results. Like you said, it could be something random and hormonal one day that may give different numbers, but if you're concerned, maybe it's best to get a second opinion? HTH!

In my first pregnancy our blood results came back as 1 in 22 chance so just like you we were totally freaking out!
Our beautiful daughter is perfectly healthy, no problems at all!
While it's impossible not to worry just try and remember that it is just a number and false positive happen a lot!
Good luck!

My screening midwife has run me today to advise that a consultant, funnily enough, the consultant I will be under is going to be doing the CVS on Friday, which helps a little as I know that he is experienced in what he is doing.

She also mentioned my HCG level from my blood test and advised that my HCG was absolutely OK but my PAPPA was low and that is what bought the 1 in 84 result, along with my age... if I had had the same result but ten years younger the risk would be that i wouldn't have been called back.

Amazing what age and hormones do for you, but fingers crossed all is well and get the all clear xxxxx

These tests grrrrrrrrr they are so stressful huh? all my best to you! great NT socre, i am sure all will be well, hang in there. keep us posted on your CVS. I am 40 pregnant with my first, had them done, felt some pressure to!

my very close friend just had a baby and her tests came back as very low risk. Unfortunately just after the birth they discovered their baby has Downs. I think it is just one of the risks you run when you have a baby. Medicin doesn't guarantee a perfectly healthy baby. Fortunately their little boy has been born into a very loving home and is deeply loved.

Just an update, had CVS procedure this morning, felt a little uncomfortable but not painful. Have rested for the rest of the day.

The consultant who carried out the procedure was brilliant, is a Professor Khaled, he said that most results do come back clear and allayed and answers questions that I had. Tissue been sent to London now to be tested on but will know by Wednesday what the results are. My little one was bouncing around, so hopefully all is well, but will keep you all updated with how things are going..... Fingers crossed all is OK now.... xxxxx

My sister in law opted to do the screening test with her first pregnancy. It came back that the baby was at risk for it as well. After seeing a specialist and having more testing it was all a waste of time... Emma is a happy healthy 4 year old now. Whole thing was just a big scare for no reason! We choose not to have it done (didn't with our first or with this baby), seeing its inaccuracy - and it doesn't matter to us anyway, God has given us this baby and we will love her unconditionally. I hope the best for you and your sweet baby!

With my son 7 years ago, my test said 1:23 chance. Even at those odds, the odds are still in your favor. We did not want to risk and amnio, since we did not wish to abort. We did however wish to be prepared, so we had some less invasive things looked at instead such as more detailed ultrasounds of the organs. Our son does not have down syndrome, but it was a very scary time. This time around, my age automatically gives me a 1:30, but so far the other blood work has been good.

Hey. I have a friend couple who had a healthy baby boy about 3-4 months ago. The husband revealed to my SO that at one of their early appointments the doctor informed them that the baby was almost certain to have downs syndrome - 90-100% chance and they actually suggested aborting. His wife did not want to hear it though and they went through with the pregnancy expectign a downs syndrome baby but in fact baby is healthy!

I'd heard about so many scary results that women get from the testing that I ended up declining getting the Down's testing done at all to save myself the stress. Chances are your baby will be just fine, I really wouldn't worry about. Stay positive! :)

FX for Wednesday - I'm sure it'll be fine :hugs:

My results came back yesterday as 1 in 4179, with no further investigation needed. I'm 33 and this is my first, so I was sure I would need a CVS test.

Hi my results come back 1 in 60 chance of having a downs baby, i had the amniocentesis done and 1 week later found out i was having a perfectly healthy baby girl. xxx

Its good to hear so many positive outcomes....it's helping me through, believe it girls..... got everything crossed and what to give you all massive :hugs: for supporting me and giving me reassurance xxxx I hope everything is OK xxxx
