1 week old killed by Dog.

Who would you prosecute though? The dog had no violent history. Would you charge the parents with negligence?

^ chis are far worse in general for nipping as I think they are very owner protective!

I just think this is a sad tragedy, blaming breed nor parents will not help :( x

totally agree very sad tragedy, no blame

I have a Labrador because in general they are nice family dogs, they tolerate children pretty well, are easy to train. People seem to attribute good things to certain breeds but ignore that they also have built in tendsncys which can be bad.

Most blind dogs are golden retrievers surely that's because because they are easy to train, you could try and train a king Charles spaniel exactly the same t you wouldn't get the same results.

I'm not against any breed but I do think it makes sense to accept that some breeds have more aggressive tendancys

it is how they are raised, I have four jack russell terriers which are not nippy in the slightest, I also breed terriers, and can definatly say its the way they are raised

I don't wholly agree with this

Yes, how dogs are treated has an affect on how they behave

However

They are animals, with animal instincts, the reality is, you never truly know

It's in their blood to hunt its what they have been bred for. We can treat dogs like little people as much as we like but their animals their natural instincts are still there and no amount of responsible ownership can overcome that completely

totally agree with this some people forget they are animals. The most gentle kindest dog could turn and bite anyone if they are feeling unwell or are in pain. like you said it is instinct and that should be treated with respect, iykwim

I raised my jack Russel cross well and he still bit me for no reason on the face very aggressively

I have been bitten by both a german shepherd and a Jack Russell.

TheGS was our family pet, I was about 2 and I ran crying to my mum and the dog ran at me and bit me across the face. My family was devastated and took her back to the breeder to be rehomed without children but the breeder had her put down.

The JRT was my nans and I was an older child who was teasing playing with her and I was chased and bitten on the hand. I realise that was my own fault and I shouldn't have teased her..taught me to respect all dogs.

All dogs can turn given the circumstance regardless of breed. I have owned my own german shepherds since I dont believe just cos one bit me the whole breed will.
Just my opinion. A tragic loss x

This broke my heart it really did.

My mum heard they left the dog in the room with the baby without supervision? I mean i feel sorry for them...but they can't be the shiniest pennies in the world can they?

Sorry hadnt read all the other posts. lets not cast judgement, as it such a tragic story. acording to the paper a full investgation will take place and the dog has already been put down.

just let it be a reminder to all us dog owners that although they cute n fluffy they are animals with animal instnicts and u can never truly know what they capable off.

How overwhelmingly compassionate of you

OK, maybe a bit harsh. But as a dog owner....they get incredibly jealous. I know when Ava was a newborn Mollie growled at her from behind the gate and if I opened it I was lucky if I got a chance to grab her before she was across and ready to attack. Surely the penny would drop....sorry, but it really does make me wonder what goes through some peoples minds.

As I said...heartbroken for them..but really. Common sense obviously didn't come into play here.

But what if the dog had shown no sign of aggression towards the baby? There doesn't have to be the growling, snarling etc beforehand, as special_kala said before, it can happen so quick.

It is just awful to see people up on their high horse and passing judgement, calling the parents fit to burn, when we do not know what happened. As far as I have read there are NO details of the circumstances surrounding it. So why make underhand comments? Imagine how heartbroken you would be, if something similar happened to you, through no fault of your own whatsoever. As I said, it's so easy to sit here and say tut tut to the parents, but in all honesty you don't know the details.

xo

Wow....when did I say the parents were fit to burn? I haven't...i'm just saying small children and animals DON'T mix. It is common sense. Sorry if you don't like my opinion but it is what it is. I get they have made a mistake and have to live with it for the rest of their lives...but honestly I do think it is common sense.

Regardless of how friendly my pet seemed towards the baby...I wouldn't leave it with him/her unsupervised. Remember this is an animal we are talking about with animal instincts- sometimes a baby can kick out without meaning to and the dog thinks "thats it, I have to react"- its their "gut feeling".

Anyway...I won't get into an argument about it because I understand some people won't see my view on this.

It is a tragedy at the end of the day and despite the mistake they made my heart goes out to them.

I didn't say YOU said :flower: it was a general comment, nobody in this thread has used the phrase "fit to burn" other than me. I didn't quote anybody as saying that did I? I was merely observing the judgement that has been passed on these poor parents.

I still think it's very unfair to state that they made a mistake. You don't know that for sure.

So sad :(

Talking about breeds that bite - I was bitten by a westie (those cute little white terriers) when I was three. I have a nice scar under my right eye to show for it. My parents had the dog put down but I have had a big fear of small dogs since then. I wouldn't ever have a terrier of any kind around children.

What a terrible thing. I can't even imagine the pain they must be going through. This happened here too, a couple of months ago. It was a 4 day old baby and a Husky.
While I agree that it's normal to question the judgment of the parents for leaving the baby in a position to get attacked, I think we have all had times (especially when dealing with a newborn) where we maybe weren't thinking clearly, or had momentary lapses in judgment...but we didn't pay for that with our baby's life like these people did. Just a horrible tragedy. Definitely preventable, but my heart really goes out to this family.

:'( Sweet dreams baby boy.

Thats so sad :(

My DD was recently bitten by a Jack Russell and Pug cross. I was right there in the room and the dog is usually very well behaved and doesn't bite. Her and DD got on brilliantly when the rest of the family was around. That day everybody was at work on the same day apart from me at home with DD and the dog and she bit her on the hand within an hour of everybody leaving.

It was so out of character and everybody was shocked but we all need to remember that a dog is an animal, not another child. It is no fault of the parents because it can and does happen to all of us.
