So tonight, just out of curiosity, I checked my cervix. I would say I'm at least 1cm dilated, and I'm only 22 weeks pregnant with my first. Should I be concerned? My mom had a lot of issues when she was pregnant with me regarding preterm labor, so I'm a little freaked out. I'm using a midwife, so I don't think she will ever check my cervix until I'm actually in labor. Has anyone else been dilated early on like this, or heard of it?

You might want to go to the hospital to stop things if they are progressing that fast.

My midwife just checked my cervix last appt because of spotting so you can ring her and ask about it.

I'd get checked. Some women feel like they are dilated when they actually aren't and then some women are always 1-2 cm dilated and carry just fine, although those are usually women who've had previous children or procedures. But not always!!! Go get checked for sure!!!!

I feel like if I brought it up, and don't have any other concerning symptoms, I'm just going to get a "well, you shouldn't be checking yourself..."

Is this your first pregnancy? Any concerns with your cervix before? I would say go get checked, just to be safe. By a doctor, not a midwife. I've lost two babies due to incompetent cervix and would hate to see that happen to you. Even if nothing is wrong, its better just to know. IC doesn't typically have other symptoms , your cervix just starts to open up.

As others have said, you should get this checked out. It could be absolutely nothing but for safety, it would be best to make sure :) Some women are at 1 cm for months and for others it's a warning sign.

I hope that it's nothing and that you get an answer soon!

I'd definitely get checked out! I'd also stop checking yourself. I'd imagine it's not great to be poking at your cervix if it's not necessary.

My doctor just checked mine because I explained I had some blood in my cm. He assured me my cervix is closed so blood is not from Bubba :)

First of all, if your hands are clean and you're not forcing your finger into your cervix, you're probably fine (the way I see it is, if I'm not being any rougher than DH's penis when it's in there, I'm probably fine :haha:). I did self-checks last pregnancy because I was contracting all the time and didn't want to rush off to L&D for no reason.

That being said, the cervix is like a funnel, and it's perfectly okay to be 1cm dilated on the outside, but if you're 1cm dilated on the inside (meaning you can actually feel all the way through to the amniotic sac) then you should definitely go in a get checked out. You don't need to tell them that you checked yourself, just say that you're concerned because of your mom's history with you, and asked to be checked, just for peace of mind. Most doctors will do that for you if you seem worried (I'm not sure about midwives, though).

Yes, I was very clean about it, so I'm really not concerned about that. I only checked the outside, didn't want to irritate it, so I'll let a professional do it the right way. :haha:
I've had some more concerned since then, I'm hoping to go in and get checked possibly tonight, just waiting on a call back from my midwife!
