2+ glucose in urine?

I saw the midwife this morning and she said I had a fair bit of glucose in my wee :( It's never happened before, so she said I just need to get it rechecked when I see her next (4 weeks), and if it's still positive she'll refer me for a GTT at 28 weeks, but if it's negative nothing needs to be done.

She says it might be nothing, and that gestational diabetes isn't the inevitable outcome, so I'm hoping it is nothing!

Has anyone got any experience of this? Is there anything I can do myself to get the glucose levels down?

Lower the amount of sugar you are eating, which includes anything that turns into sugar. ie. white bread, potatoes, white rice, etc. Increase your intake of protein and vegetables and if you are eating something that has sugar like fruit, eat it with protein (cheese, nuts, etc.) Also regular exercise helps as well. I am on a low-glycemic diet as I developed GD in both previous pregnancies and had large babies. Hoping to avoid GD this time around and have a smaller babe in the end. HTH! :)

Mine did this at 1 of my anti natal appts with my eldest son, so I panicked when they told me, my appointment was in the afternoon & they asked me what I'd eaten so I told them what I'd had for lunch they said it could've been that but to oh back in 2wks & they'd recheck, so before my next appointment I made sure I hadn't had anything like what I'd ate that day & my tests came back clear x

Thank you ladies :D

I have been eating a lot of fruit lately - apples are my most consistent craving, and I've also been eating peaches and nectarines. Plus I have a pretty sweet tooth for chocolate etc. So I will cut right down on that, and make sure I have protein with my apples.

I assume wholemeal is better? Hubby won't go for wholemeal pasta in shared dishes, but I can make it for myself if we can dish up separately, and have wholemeal bread instead of white etc. Is there a good website you can recommend for ideas of low-GI meals and snacks?

Exercise is something I'm trying to build back up after not feeling like it for so long due to m/s and pain in the back of my pelvis. Hopefully increasing my swimming and using the exercise bike more will also help. I walk wherever I can, too.

Hopefully in the next month I can put a lid on this!

Krippy, I hope you manage to avoid the GD this time...it does not sound like fun at all. I'm glad you managed to avoid it too, mrs.humphreys :D

My craving is apples too...loving anything crunchy! :) I don't know a specific website but if you google GI recipes I am sure something will come up! Let us know how you get on next check up!

With GD it doesn't always mean you will have large babies, either. I never had protein in my urine but I had GD and delivered a 6lb 12oz baby at 39 weeks. She had to stay an extra day in the hospital on IV sugar water to regulate her levels.

I was found to have GD at 26 weeks and it was easily controlled with monitoring and healthy eating with exercise. I noticed certain things sent it off, like milk.

I didn't have GD with my first baby. So you can have it in one pregnancy and not another.

Same as Leinzlove, I've had two GD pregnancies, never picking up any sugar in urine and also had two small babies at 6lb 2oz and 5lb 5oz so doesn't mean big baby.

I agree, just try to cut down on sugar, and carbs! I find carbs are worse than anything else for me. I couldnt even eat one weetabix without having a high sugar reading :dohh:

Hopefully there won't be any GD anyway :) x

Thank you, it's good to know that even if it does turn into GD it doesn't mean it's going to be terrible. Hopefully it won't, so fingers crossed :) LeinzLove and SisterRose, I hope you escape it this time round too :flower:

Definitely, it can be managed. It's better to know about it and control it.

just a little update, I had another midwife appointment this morning (moved forward as I couldn't make the one I had booked for the end of the month) and there was no glucose this time  Hopefully it will stay that way!

For the ladies who never had glucose in their wee, how did they pick up the GD? Did you have a GTT as standard, or were there other signs pointing to it?

I had a gtt as standard x

Ah, I see. I'm not sure if they do that down here, she only mentioned GTT because of the glucose in the urine thing...my BMI is fractionally higher than it should be, but I don't think everyone gets a GTT here.

Just hoping everything stays nice and normal now...for all of us!
