i make my LO 5 6oz bottles a day so in each bottle i put 6oz of water then add 6 scoops of formula, then i shake the bottle to mix it and after that it then has 7oz in the bottle. am i doing something wrong? does this mean she is having 6oz or 7oz? its too hot for my brain to work properly lol

i wondered about this too, but the aptamil tub says to do 180ml of water to 6 scoops.. so thats what im doing and its reading 7oz on all her bottles.. i say its 6oz because shes having 6 scoops, the rest is just made up of water! x

Aah, this old chestnut :D

The volume of water + the volume of the scoops (powder has a volume too!) = the total volume of formula in the bottle. It would seem that it always works out as being 1 extra oz in the bottle (roughly).

For ease of reference, you are still making up a 6oz bottle. That indicates the amount of water you started with, and the number of scoops you added (as I've not encountered a formula that isn't 1 scoop to 1oz). However, there are 7oz of fluid in the bottle, so if your baby drains the bottle, she's had 7oz of fluid :)

HTH :)

What she said! Always go by how much water you put in. That's how much the feed is, irrespective of how much fluid ends up in the bottle.

I was also wondering about that actually.... when I do 180ml bottle it ends up being 200ml of milk exactly...

maybe ur water is too hot! as when i make up lola's bottles with water thats sat cooling for 30mins it makes an extra ounce but when i make it when im out and the water has cooled for around 2hours or till room temp it dosent make an extra ounce. HTH xxxxx

The formula that my sister in law uses for my niece is a scoop for every 2 ounces.

6 oz=3 scoops:shrug:

So she's using a different brand to the OP and everyone else posted? It's not really an issue. The OP was asking about what happens with the formula she's using. Certainly Aptimil & Cow and Gate are both 1 for 1, and I'm assuming the OP is using one of them.

The change in volume of the bottle is just down to the physics of what happens when you dissolve a solute (powder) in a solvent (water). The resulting solution will have a greater volume than the original solvent.

I forgot to quote and was referring to the post that said they hadn't come across a formula that wasn't 1 scoop to every once. Sorry:blush:

Thought you might've been replying to me

When I said I hadn't come across it, I meant simply that - I've not come across it in the formula brands I've used / been around people using :)
