Hi ladies

hope you are all welll.i have a question and really hoping someone can tell me what i want to hear. my aunt is about 8-9 weeks pregnant(according to her calculation) she is 37 yrs old.she went for her scan today and they could not pick up a heartbeat and so have reffered her to a specialist! she has not had any spotting or cramping of any sort and has preg symtoms..What i would like to know is if any one has been in a similiar situtation and all has turned out to be fine....please please please someone put my mind at ease!!!

i look forward to your replys

thanks

i didnt want to read and run i have no idea though i just wanted to offer hugs to both yourself and your aunt!

Didnt want to read and run. im no expert by any means but i think there should definately be a heartbeat detected at 9 weeks. is it possible that the scanning equiptment they used was very old? was it a vaginal ultrasound or a stomach one?

could it be possible she wasnt as far along. as far as im aware a heartbeat normaly is picked up around the 6 to 7 week mark.

What it more than likely to have happened is that the pregnancy isn't as far gone as she thought. I have no experience to share but my thoughts are with you. Xx

Unfortunately it sounds like an early miscarriage, this has happened to me twice where there was no heartbeat. The second time there was no baby either, just an empty sac, but the sac was the right size for 8 weeks.
If the sac is less than 20-25mm depending on equipment used, she may not be as far along as she thinks and it may possibly turn out ok.
If the sac is bigger than that, or there is an embryo bigger than 5mm with no heartbeat on a vaginal scan, then I'm sorry to say that the pregnancy has almost certainly failed.
It's very very sad if that is the case, but unfortunately it happens a lot. Not that that will make you or your aunt feel any better about it right now, I know.

hi ladies

thank you for your replys i have just had an update from her,she said that it was a stomach scan and the baby and uterus were both measuring at 8 weeks 6 days. That is good right..well she is busy trying to get anotrher scan done somewhere else asap..will keep you updated...maybe baby was in a difficult position or machine just not strong enough?

Really they should have been able to detect a heartbeat on an embryo that size. Even with the stomach scan. However, i think it is probably a very good idea to get a second opinion and have another scan so she knows where things stand. It is possible that the sonographer wasn't very experienced and that's why they couldn't find the heartbeat. Usually they can find it within 30 seconds though.
I'm really sorry that you and your aunt are going through this worrying time. I would say definitely get a second opinion and don't write it off just yet, but be prepared for it to be bad news.

so was she able to hear a heartbeat?

no it all could be fine.
there is midwife on this website and she posted a thread somewhere talking about detecting heartbeats.
she said some widwifes do not find a heartbeat until 11-12 weeks so i wouldnt worry just yet.
if the specialist can not find it then im not sure whats going on there sorry hun. wish i could be more help.

Hi there, I would definitely recommend that she has an internal scan - however a heartbeat should have been picked up at 8.5 weeks- it would look like a tiny flicking motion on the ultrasound monitor- I had a ultrasound at 8 weeks gestation with my son and this was what we had seen. My second pregnancy ended unfortunately in a missed miscarriage - my little angel died at 8.5 weeks but I didn't know until I would have been 12 weeks pregnant. I didn't have any symptoms (no bleeding or pains) to suggest anything was wrong - my body had continued to think I was pregnant and my uterus had grown to carry a 12 week old baby. I had two internal scans. I really hope that your aunt gets a second scan and a heartbeat is detected. Thinking of you and your aunt xx

o sorry that was just details of her scan that she had that was unable to dectect a heartbeat..she is stilll trying to find a gynea that can see her today...

at 8-9wks a hb should be seen but fx for some good news. x x

I didn't want to r&r.
i went in for my first scan at 8 weeks 6 days, and the baby was measuring about a week behind and they couldn't find the heartbeat. so i had to get blood work done to check the hormone levels.
I just got the call and the increased but not as much as they should have. so i get another scan on Thursday.

tell her there's always hope until they prove there isn't. just keep thinking positive!!

hopefully things work out!!

!:hugs:

Honestly, a heartbeat should be seen by this stage. I had a missed miscarriage myself, and it does happen. However, dates and measurements are not exact, and a second opinion is vital. Fingers crossed -x-

So sorry, but at 9 weeks there should definitely be a heartbeat. Praying that the ultrasound is wrong!

Hi Kat,

I have experienced two missed miscarriages with the second one coming back "tetraploidy" (92 chromosomes). I go back to the doctor tomorrow for further testing. Both times, the sac was measuring on time but no fetal pole ever developed. From your post, it looks like you are very knowledgable about this. If you don't mind me asking, did you have the tissue tested?
