:hi: girls, sorry you've probably been asked this a MILLION times but formula feeding is realllllly confusing me! I've got the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature bottles with the separate milk powder container. So what I planned to do is boil the kettle (do I have to leave it for 30 mins before pouring into bottles?) and pour the water into 4 bottles. Put the milk powder in the containers and put the bottles of water in the fridge. Then when baby is ready for a feed take a bottle out of the fridge, add the powder and warm the bottle. How does this sound? Then when I go out and about I planned to do the same thing but instead of putting the bottle in the fridge, put it in a bottle insulator to keep the water warm then add the formula from the container when LO gets hungry. Is this OK? Sorry it's long winded, I would really appreciate any advice :flower:

When LO was eating powder formula at home (he's now on liquid), we did something slightly different. We would boil the water and once it was cool enough (not sure if you have to wait 30 mins or so), pour the amount needed into bottles and just leave them on the counter. When LO was hungry, we would pour the powder into the bottle, shake and give it to LO without heating it up (since it was at room temperature).

Now that LO is using the liquid formula (cheaper for us), we use boiled water with the liquid, and store it in the fridge. When it's time for a feed, the bottle is obviously heated first.

When we go out, we use powder formula because it's easier and you don't end up wasting bottles of formula. Again, we pour cooled boiled water into the bottles we are taking with us. When LO is hungry, we pour the pre-measured formula into the bottle, shake and ready to feed.

That sounds ok to me. I think some people even put the powder into the water and keep in the fridge for 24 hours. I do pretty much the same as JayeD but I don't even bother to wait for the water to cool, just pour straight from the kettle into the bottle and add the powder when needed at room temp. It's the recommended way, you are meant to add powder to 70 degree water.

There are loads of threads with different ways of doing it if you have a search. x

Thanks girls. It is so confusing (well as a first time mum I am finding it confusing!) Did an experiment with the bottle insulators and they didn't keep the water warm for even 2 hours :grr: so its back to the drawing board!

I've been pouring cooled boiled water (keep a jug full in the fridge) into the bottles then leaving the bottles in the fridge until feed time. When Amelia is ready I pull it out, chuck it in the microwave and heat the water then add the formula and she set to go. I know about air pockets etc with microwaves but by the time a shake the water to test it in me then add the formala and shake that, there are no air pockets left. I'd love to make up all the bottles, stick them in the fridge and just heat when needed but she's on reflux formula and it gets thicker the longer it stands. When we go out I'll put boiling water into her bottles and usually by the time she needs her bottle its just the perfect temp to add the formula and feed.
