Weren't we in a recession when Obama came into office? Aaand we're not now? Canada gets hit too whenever the US is in a recession, so I know it was recent but just a little confused, if he spent lets say, half his term doing damage control, he wasn't given much of a chance to make it better. I'm not 100% sure of the facts here though.

Dunno but I am pretty sure that the cutting back hasnt helped us (the UK) out of the recession, in fact the complete opposite and I think that is what Romney wants to do, cuts, cuts and more cuts.

Romney is going to tax the middle class. He only cares about the rich. Also will be sending jobs to china, that will help the American people a lot, hah.

Yeah that's what I mean. When he got elected their finances were FUBAR. Though they're not amazing now, they have improved from the recession he started with. (from what I remember, am I right to say this Americans?)

Oh and one more thing, after taking the Life in the UK test, that my DH (a UK citizen) couldn't pass, I'm sure I know more about the UK than a UK citizen :haha:

Only some of them.

Some Brits may not know where South Dakota is but on the other hand, many Americans would not be able to locate Northumberland on a map either. There is a difference between knowing detailed locations within a country and the where the country is itself.

We have socialised medicine. That's what people mean in the us.

That is purely what they mean when they say Obama will turn the US into a socialist country?!

I just honestly don't understand the appeal of Mitt Romney. The whole '47%' thing, saying in the debate that the government does not create jobs - does he even WANT to be president? I liked the description of him being the real life version of the rich asshole in a 1980's high school comedy :haha:

Our government's role was CLEARLY spelled out in the Constitution. Much of what we have today is unconstitutional. They was supposed to be MINIMAL taxation for only things necessary for the running of our country (infrastructure, defense, etc.). It is NOT supposed to paying people who don't want to work to stay home or paying for anyone's medical care! The whole 47% thing was completely taken out of context. I think he meant they don't matter in trying to convince them to vote for him in a campaign. Those of us that DO have to pay for the 47% really don't look too kindly at them anyway. If you are able to work (even if you have kids) get your butt off the couch and GET A JOB (and stop having kids you can't afford). It's one thing if you are truly unable to work, but I think everyone can agree that 47% of the population is NOT in that position. If you can't work you should not be living up to the standards of those that pay for you either. There is NO need for a cell phone. There is also no need for a private home (or even technically electricity). The things required to live are water, food (and steaks, shrimps, booze are NOT required), shelter, and clothing (though technically not really a biological need). Anything beyond that should not be provided. There is SO much abuse of the system (obviously if 47% of the population is getting money BACK from the government) it's sickening that we have to work so hard to pay for deadbeats that have as many as 10 kids (when they couldn't afford the first). Obama has had 4 years to fix things and they are still just as bad or worse than when he came in. Though I don't think Romney is a glowing example of what we need, at least he is different than the fool who already had 4 years and has only made a bigger mess for us.

Please do not make such generalizations regarding tax payers. Many of us are able to view the less-fortunate without contempt and utter disgust.
:dohh:

Cuts need to happen. We need to stop getting into debt which means cuts have to be made somewhere. Checks and Balances people.

Obamacare is a tax and something we cannot afford. I have pre-existing conditions and I still want Obamacare gone! Have you read the 700 pages of it? I have read most of it and it scares the crap out of me!

Agreed. I feel like it is my right to choose what doctor I want to go to and who I don't. We get a small taste of the "universal healthcare" model in the military. ( It is 100% free if you let the military choose where you're treated). It's pretty bad. So bad in fact that DH and I choose to pay for DD and I NOT to go to military Drs and pay to go civilian. I won't even go into the ridiculous-ness of the system on here because it would take pages. I know some people like it and some don't but at least we have a choice.

Cutting our teachers and education is a mighty fine place to start.

What confuses me is how Obama in his closing comments at last night's debate mentions that we need to focus on things at home like our ROADS AND BRIDGES?! Surely there's more important things to focus on.

While I agree that Tricare has it's moments, they still provide FREE healthcare to dependents and/or very low out-of-pocket cost for Tricare Standard. The system offers much more for much less than you would get in the private sector.

The health care system in the States is the #1 reason I would never, ever move there.

From an outside perspective it's not appealing in the slightest.

I hear all my poor heart block mommy friends talking about how they pay thousands a month in insurance and how their kids aren't covered except if they work. Meaning they have to work to get their kids healthcare because of their pre existing conditions. Makes me so sad and angry.

You mean you don't want come to the US, go to the ER and get charged thousands of dollars that you don't have? What doesn't sound appealing about that? :winkwink:

If people don't pay their er bills, doesn't everyone else foot the bill anyways?

No, it goes to collections. Then they can take you to court and have it taken directly from your paycheck. (Not all at once, a % of each check.) I'm not 100% sure what happens if you have no income what so ever. I would think in most of those cases it's people who can work and don't. I've heard of judges making people get a job. Not so sure about people who can't work. I would think most cases they are on some type of Medicade plan or something.
