Just wondered if there are any other ladies out there who have crohns disease? I have had it for 5 years now and am TTC. If anyone has or knows anyone who has, how was your pregnancy? Or if TTC how are you coping? My IBD nurse has given me info about it and advised me to stay on current meds while TTC and pregnant...it'd just be nice to speak to someone else in same boat. x

Hi, I'm not much help, as I don't have crohns, but my mum has had it since her teens, quite severely, and now has a permanent colostomy, which she had shortly after giving birth to my youngest brother. I believe she stayed on most of her meds while ttc and pregnant, apart from steriods. I talk to her quite a lot about TTC, and if you have any questions I'll be happy to pass them on (she's not into chatrooms/forums!).

Good luck

ps. she's had 4 children, and 4 healthy pregnancies!

I have either Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis, though nowadays seem to believe it's UC I've got.

I asked about TTC whilst on medication and my Gastro said it was far more harmful for an unborn baby for those with IBD not to take their medication than it was for them to grow with you taking your medication.

Also, I was told not to TTC during a flare-up, as it would be likely that they would not be able to get it under control during pregnancy and it goes without saying that a flare-up of any IBD could be very harmful to a foetus.

I was also told that IBD shouldn't affect fertility at all, although certain medications can lower sperm count in males.

I have had Ulcertaive colitis for 10 years. My gastroenterologist said the same thing- not to TTC during a flare up. I was recently diagnosed with Endometriosis. Apparently there is a co-relation between endo and UC as they are both auto immune disorders and women with UC have a higher incidence of endo. Also the symtoms for both are similar. I am on meds for UC for 10 years now. My RE does not seem too concerned about them.

Thanks for the replies! I'm currently in remission so its a good time for me to TTC. Cakeface, its reassuring to know your mum has had 4 healthy pregnancies and babies, hope I can do the same! x

Hi there. I also have Crohns and stumbled upon your post in doing research. I also am ttc'ing. I have had to see an RE due to infertility issues that could or could not be directly related to the disease. I have stayed on my medication and so far have been in remission. I have gotten pregnant but miscarried early. I can tell you that besides having Crohn's, I have barely been sick a day in my life. I believe that I have a hyperactive immune system and that plays a role in my issues ttc'ing. We shall see. I know my reply doesn't say much as all of us are so different. Good luck and baby dust to you!

Hello,
I was diagnosed with UC when I was 16, at 19 they removed my colon and gave me a temp ileostomy and then did the J pouch in a second surgery 10 months later ( the J pouch is inside not outside the body) and I was ok for almost 2 years when I started getting gallstones and had a fistula that got so bad I couldn't even sit. My doctor at the time told me that I may have been diagnosed wrong and said I probably had crohn's not UC.

My husband and I started ttc in 2009 after 3 years of marriage I was tired of just being a wife and wanted to be a mom, it was a rough year as we both lost a grandparent within a month and he had to go to the Phillipppines and I went to Newfoundland two weeks after hubby came home and we decided that we were looking for a house and it was time to start trying and so far my crohn's has caused a lot of problems with me being in pain 5 times in the past year.
Since Oct I have been on clomid as my fertility doctor thought I may not have been ovulating on my own every month and still nothing so I know how frustrating it can be and I hope everyone will have happy healthy babies in the near future.

Lots of baby dust girls. :baby::dust:

I was diagnosed with UC at 16. Went into remission for 3 years. At 20 had a temp ileostomy and now have a J-pouch. I had my first son at 18 while in remission(so young, but never regretted it). Had my second son after I got my J-pouch. Took 11 months to conceive the second time. After trying 10 months with no success my ob/gyn ordered a dye test to check tubes for scar tissue. There was a small amount of blockage on my left tube (probably a mucus plug) and the dye pushed it out. I conceived the next month and carried full term. I did have some dehydration issues which caused pre-term contractions, but still carried full term and had a scheduled c-section. :flower: Good luck and lots of :dust:

I dont have chrones but I know of a friend do, and she is my age. Early 20's. I don't know the whole story, only that she was very regular. But it took her over a year to get pregnant, which is still not too bad. Even normal healthy couples take up to a year.

BigRabbit, kindly get off this thread because I WILL report you. You have gone to countless threads and just keep putting "lol". Give it up already.

I diagnosed with Crohn's disease when i was 15, so 17 years ago now. I was really ill for the 1st 3 years and then on and off til i was about 21. I've been very lucky that since then i have been well and i don't even take any medication anymore, haven't done for a few years now.

I was pregnant twice last year - mmc and mc, and am now pregnant again, i am assuming the miscarriages were nothing to do with having Crohn's as i am in remission, and i haven't been told otherwise.

As far as i know it is safe to take steroids if needed when pregnant but best to ttc when you are not having a flare up xx

Crap I posted this in the wrong thread lol. I'm on my phone grr. Sorry everyone.

Hi its been 6 years ive been in remission for chrones disease and i had the op to remove 30cm away form my bowel after that i was fine and stopped takin my meds .... i was ttc for 3 years and thought it would never happen im currently 5 months pregnant and cudnt be happier im healthy and so is baby i drink lots of water and eat loads of fruit i do worry if im takin the nutrients off the baby but i think most people with chrones desease do ?

I have both crohns disease and UC and I am currently TTC. I have been in remission for over a year... I am interested in meeting and charting with someone who is going thru what I am with my condition, while TTC and during pregnancy.

Good luck

I have crohns and am trying to conceive. I have had to come off all my meds-steroids, immunosuppressants, mesalazine etc and am feeling the effects. Not had a period of remission for around 5 years.

Have heard several stories from ladies with crohns that their symptoms go when pregnant. Interesting to see of that happens.

Good luck xxx

I have uc and I've been in remission for about a year, I'm now 4 weeks pregnant and having a flare up, typical!!

Do I take the flare up medication Pentasa?? I really don't want to take anything but I'm hoping that just two or three days of meds might do it.....

Anyone taken pentasa during pregnancy??

I am new to this site and I have crohns disease. I was diagnosed about a year ago and I have a 5 year old daughter and a 2 year old son. I'm pregnant now, about 7 weeks along and terrified that this crappy disease is going to cause complications. Are there any people on this site who have gone to term with active Crohns?

I have Crohn's and I got diagnosed in College, so I've had it for 8 years or so. I take Pentasa, and the Crohn's hasn't interfered with my TTCing. Pentasa is safe to use during pregnancy according to my GI doc, so I just keep taking 1000mg per day (500mg AM, 500mg PM), and it's really well controlled.

I do get Crohn's attacks, with the intense stabbing pains in my stomach, but I take Oxycodone or Morphine Sulfate for that and they usually go away. They're intense, but I only get attacks about 1 or 2 times a month.

Good luck to you, and lots of baby dust! :dust:

Hi. I've had bowel problems for as long as I can remember but I wasn't diagnosed till Jan 2011 with crohns. This was after I had my DD in June 2010 :cloud9: During my pregnancy I was one of the unlucky people to be incredibly poorly and at first the docs said I had hyperemesis, I had many hospital stays getting rehydrated by IV and I had almost constant poops:blush: Im pretty sure that it was after I had a very violent episode that my waters actually started to leak and I was induced early  My symptoms continued well after my DD was born and finally I had the investigations that lead to diagnoisis. I was trying a med called salofalk granules, and that didn't really help as I turned out quite allergic to it :dohh: so I was advised to try steriods by my consultant who wrote with details to my gp. I really didn't want to go on the steriods so I kept putting of my gp appt and I seemed to managing my symptoms and I'd say I've been in remission now for 6 mths by avoiding certain trigger foods and reducing the stress in my life, and obviously not being pg!!. I still get the odd flare up but nothing like what I was experiancing. I am now ttc#2 and am very nervous about what will happen. I really hope I stay in remission, but I have a good support system, but don't want my DD to suffer.

I seemed to have waffled off the point a bit! So although I was not diagnosed before TTc our dd I actually was very lucky and caught quickly, so we will have to wait and see what happens this time and if the disease has had any adverse affect on fertility.
