Any vegetarians putting meat back on the menu?

Well I've learnt a lot from this thread. I had no idea a fish was a vegetable :dohh:

I've been vegetarian for 12 years, no meat or fish. I was a vegetarian all the time I was TTC, all through my pregnancy and I still am now. Nothing will change that. My OH is a vegetarian too.

My baby is perfect, 8lb 1oz at birth so hardly malnourished!

Remember, an unhealthy meat diet is a lot worse than a vegetarian diet.

One of my friends is vegan and she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy last month. She had had a miscarriage before that pregnancy but I very much doubt that it will have been because she was a vegan. My OH's sister had a miscarriage a few years ago and she eats meat, then she went on to have another baby. It doesn't matter if you eat meat or don't, as long as you eat the right things and don't do things you shouldn't really.

Btw, I just re-read my message and I don't mean to sound angry or as if I'm having a go, I'm also not a vegetarian, but do know alot of people who are, and have had healthy, happy babies. Just saying you don't need to give up what you believe in :)

P.S. I havn't been on for a few months, thats why it says AF was due on 11th August

hiya!! i am a veggie, i am not planning on eating meat, i have a book vegetarian cook book, its fab it shows u can get all your nutriants etc with out meat!!! :D

everyone really needs to quit going so far off topic! start another thread somewhere else if you want to discuss "what constitutes being vegetarian"

to answer the question - i don't normally answer questions unless i can actually answer the question if that makes any sense. but since you seem to be getting so few responses to your actual question i'll say this - my best friend is vegan. always trying to convert people when she can bless her heart. she did not once eat anything she normally wouldn't have throughout pregnancy and she and her son are both completely healthy. it is more work esp during pregnancy to keep up with this sort of lifestyle but it CAN be done! she took vegan whole food vitamins to supplement as needed, but her daily eating is very specific and she made sure to get as much of everything she needed from food. there is absolutely nothing wrong with you eating meat for your baby if that's what you think is best. it all comes down to personal choice. (for the record, there's nothing wrong with calling yourself vegetarian if you still eat fish. i have another friend who recently "turned vegetarian" yet eats fish. it's just easier to say vegetarian than explain what pescetarian means!)

i really hope people start answering your question so you can get the numbers you wanted of how many people started eating meat again while pregnant! for this post, count it as a "no i did not" :hugs:

LOL...I really think it is hilarious that the OP simply was asking a "YES" or "NO" question...not for everyone's "politically correct" responses on how many different types of vegetarians there are. I think there are too many hormonal prego women on here!! AND...I am not saying that in a bad way! I know I am very hormonal and freak for no reason! We just all need to chillax!

On the other hand to the OP- I think it is awesome that you gave your hubby a say so in how you are eating for the baby. It's an awesome way to help him feel included in it :)

My husband is a meat eater but I wouldn't munch corpse for his benefit. Each to their own I suppose eh?
Actually, as the OP was asking about vegetarians eating/not eating meat during pregnancy it's a bit odd that so many meat eaters are jumping in to criticise the comments made by the veggies who were being addressed. I don't think the OP's question was 'how many meat eaters think a veggie should eat meat when pregnant' was it?

Ashley you just said in your post about everyone not answering her question and going off the subject..... What are you talking about vegans for then???? Shes talking about being a veggie.. Totally different!! I think you also have gone off the subject!

This isn't an argument everyone this is everyone putting there own opinions and information together.

im vegetarian and eat fish, never even heard of the word pescetarian! ah well lol

I dont eat meat coz it makes me physically sick from the age of 3!

If u can eat the meat hun i say go for it

sometimes i wish that i wasnt such a fussy eater and could eat meat but just cant! Good luck :) xx

If you eat fish and no meat you are a vegetarian. Some just choose not to eat fish also like myself

Oxford Dictionary definition:

vegetarian(vege|tar¦ian)

Pronunciation:/vɛdʒɪˈtɛːrɪən

noun
a person who does not eat meat or fish, and sometimes other animal products, especially for moral, religious, or health reasons

adjective
relating to vegetarians or vegetarianism:
a vegetarian restaurant

That's the way it is. Some fish eaters call themselves vegetarians for some reason but they are not- fact! I could call myself the Bishop Desmond Tutu if I wanted to but it doesn't make it so.

Gosh! What a thread.. I am vegetarian (no fish)!!! and have been for 20years, (since I was 9) I will be staying a veggie too. I have a very healthy diet and eat alot healthier than alot of my meat eater friends! Do as you please... but just eat well. Thats the main thing! I personally could never eat meat again, but i recognise personal choice.
Vegetarianism is often like asking someone for directions at work etc.. everyone has a bloody opinion!! (I generally stay clear, but equally expect that people dont try and be ignorant to my views either. I think thats fair.
Often, meat substitute has more protein in it than meat... so just do the research if you are lacking in vitamins/iron etc. I personally have never had a problem!
Enjoy your pregnancy! x

wow, this topic got on a tangent.... anyway, I was a vegetarian before the pregnancy but have started eating some meat, both fish and so far cold cuts like roast beef and ham. I started because I've been craving them. Having said that, it's true that if you are have a healthy vegetarian diet (whether or not it includes fish for you), you do not NEED to add other meat for the baby. You may want to look at some of these veggie pregnancy cook books and some websites for advice, and of course take your vitamins, but I don't think you'll need to change your diet much if any. Just do what feels right I guess. I made my choice, and it sounds like a lot of other people here have made theirs.

This thread has indeed turned political! Personally I'm a vegetarian, have been all my life, and am considering a vegan pregnancy because it turns out it has some great health benefits!
But to the OP, just wanted to say if you do eat seafood and meat during your pregnancy, watch out for certain things like undercooked meats, mercury in fish, cold meats etc. that carry the risk of bacteria n contamination:

Good luck, and wish you all a very healthy pregnancy!

I've been a semi vegetarian (I only eat fish, but rarely) for a year and a half. I'm FINALLY pregnant again after mc, and my DH told me he wants me to eat meat again for the baby's sake. He was dead serious.

So, because it's his baby too, today for breakfast I actually had a meat sausage just to prove to him I was willing to do it. Not the healthiest start, but it's a start at least. :D

Any other vegetarians go back to eating some meat while pregnant?

ok im not getting involved in the whole vegetarian debate just wanted to say i think its a good thing that you taken what you DH wants on board and hope you have a H&H pregnancy :) x

I have been vegetarian for for over ten years and have decided to continue doing so while I am pregnant. I am taking a multivitamin and a vegetarian source of omega 3. I do not feel that I am depriving the baby of any nutrients I would otherwise get from consuming a meat based diet.

I'm a vegetarian and so are my children. They have never had any health problems etc but I do make sure they get lots of protein via other means.

BTW, a person who eats fish but no meat is called a pescetarian.

My goodness. Could we give the OP a break please?

I'm veggie and during my last pregnancy I had such strong cravings for meat that I started eating chicken again. The world did not end and I went right back to vegetarianism after DD was born.

It's OK. Whatever you decide.

Actually I don't think many on here have been having a go at the OP, more at the people who keep insisting that you can be a vegetarian and eat fish. The OP referred to herself as a semi-vegetarian and knows full well that she isn't a veggie. Certain others seem to think that a fish is a vegetable.

If You Eat Enough Of A Varied Diet Without Eating Meat It Should Be Fine... Pulses And Things Like Lentils Are High In Protein Anyway... I'm Also A Pescalatarian And I've Thought About Eating Meat But I Just Couldn't Do It.... As Long As Your Diet Is Healthy And You're Not Eating Things You Shouldn't Then You'll Be Fine... If You Start Craving Meat Then Obviously Your Needing It So Just Eat What Your Body Is Telling You You Need :)
