Any vegetarians putting meat back on the menu?

Ive been veggie for 14 years and could never ever have bought myself 2 eat meat, the idea of it makes me feel physically sick, but I am an ethical veggie and after so long, eating an animal 4 me is like someone asking you 2 eat a human, just feels impossibly wrong. I dont feel I am unhealthy, I took very good prenatal vits when preggers, the pregnacare ones all the way through pregnancy, then continued afterwards when breastfeeding. Now I take vegetarian vits and minerals and eat a varied and balanced diet. My son has also never eaten meat as I wont cook it and my OH dont cook (he aint veggie, but is by default at home lol) my son is a strapping lad at 28lbs at 18 months and FULL of energy, I dont feel he is mising out on anything xxxx

I love the smell of bacon and sausage when its cooking but i know i could never eat it for the fear of throwing it back up! the smell tho...YUM!!x

Actually I don't think many on here have been having a go at the OP, more at the people who keep insisting that you can be a vegetarian and eat fish. The OP referred to herself as a semi-vegetarian and knows full well that she isn't a veggie. Certain others seem to think that a fish is a vegetable.

So what? What has it got to do with her question? Let others think what they want, why be so rude and aggressive?

I don't want to get into any discussion about this but you might find this : https://offbeatmama.com/2009/10/vegetarian-pregnant-anemia-meat
helpful and this: https://offbeatmama.com/2010/09/vegan-pregnancy I know you're not vegan but it's an interesting read. I find it interesting that sometimes your body simply wont let you stick to your ways no matter how healthy it is.

Hi!
I normally don't eat red meat as I have a bowl condition that seems to be worsened by eating beef etc but ever since I go pregnant I keep thinking about beef stew and dumplings!....Oh and beefburgers, which normally I hate. I haven't had any red meat yet as I'm scared of upsetting my stomach but I'll see how I go!
I think you can have a perfectly healthy pregnancy without meat so long as you get the nutrients elsewhere but it's nice that you discussed it with your DH. I'd just go with what you feel happy with :)
xx

blimey just popped back onto this thread and am amazed what you decide to eat or not eat is your own personal choice and its all well and good giving your opinion but forcing your beliefs on others and shoving your superior complex about being a true vegan or true vegatarian in ppls faces is rediculous! who bloody cares if someone wants to eat fish or if they want to eat meat while they are pregnant personally i cannot live without KFC! haha

hey OP,

I'm the same kind of 'vegetarian' as you, in that I'm actually a peskatarian (excuse the spelling, don't know if that's right!). In company and when eating out people assume I'm a vege and I go along with it as most people I know have never heard the term peskatarian. if they want to know more about why I don't eat meat/my diet (which strangely nearly always gets a discussion going around dinner tables even though I don't even mention my 'politics'), I'll mention I do eat fish/seafood.

Anyway, I DID actually start eating meat this PG, 24/7 nausea and no appetite meant I was living on soup/cereal then I went off them and quorn/veggie burgers, so I got worried about my developing baby. I was hardly getting any protein, having not eaten meat for 9 years I was surprised I wasn't retching at the taste of it. I ate meat for a few weeks but now I'm off it again, but thankfully can eat more foods so hopefully LO is happy in there. If he/she craves meat again I'll eat it,

xx

I'm baffled how someone can think vegetarianism or veganism is a religion. That is truly ridiculous. You can make the choice to be a vege/vegan for health reasons or ethical reasons. But it is certainly not a religion, nobody prays to PETA, there is no dogma. It is simply a lifestyle choice. I might have voted for president Obama, that doesn't mean that I pray to Obama, it was just a choice, not a religion.

I've actually gone right off bacon, not quite sure what that's all about. I have replaced bacon sandwiches for vast amounts of satsumas. WTH is that about??? Far too healthy.

Do you usually like smoked bacon? I have found that even though smoked bacon and ham are favorites of mine I'm also pushing away now anything that is smoked. I think it might have something to do with the strength of the smoking, just guessing.

I used to be a strict veggie for about 10 years but pregnancy made me crave meat so bad so i started eating meat again but only free range local meat i buy it from a farmshop and the owners have raised it all themselves to very high standards yes it does cost a lot more then cheap meat but it tastes so good.

I eat some meat, chicken mainly but the odd burger lol. Neither one particularly agrees with me but I like the taste. I'm all for letting my kids have some so would add more to my diet if the baby craves it.

If your reason isn't ethical OP then I dont see what all this fuss is about:shrug: Just try and stick to a healthy diet and its all good!

hahaha we are really going off the subject now!! going to to religon and belives!! This is obs a very sensitive subject that different people have very different views on however for the people that keep saying close the thread... come on if you dont want to keep reading and replying you dont have to... no one is being agressive or using fowl words its just a subject that we all have different views on and its a bit of a heated subject, no reson to close a thread!! noone is getting bullied!!

I took very good prenatal vits when preggers, the pregnacare ones all the way through pregnancy, then continued afterwards when breastfeeding. Now I take vegetarian vits and minerals and eat a varied and balanced diet.

Just thought I'd mention for other veggies that only the normal pregnacare tablets are vegetarian - the plus ones and the breastfeeding ones contain fish oil (which are fine if you are a pescetarian).

I've been a semi vegetarian (I only eat fish, but rarely) for a year and a half. I'm FINALLY pregnant again after mc, and my DH told me he wants me to eat meat again for the baby's sake. He was dead serious.

So, because it's his baby too, today for breakfast I actually had a meat sausage just to prove to him I was willing to do it. Not the healthiest start, but it's a start at least. :D

Any other vegetarians go back to eating some meat while pregnant?

I'm veggie and I went through the same thought process - but my OH was actually the opposite, he thought I shouldn't suddenly change my diet after 7 years of no meat, as it might put strain on my body and then I might not know if I was getting symptoms because of the pregnancy or because of the sudden change in diet.. I guess you could reassure your OH that you'll make sure you eat well, you can be a meat eater and still not get what your body needs, it's really about deciding what is mentally best for you I think. If you enjoy what you eat then you will eat well :) But maybe don't put too mush stress on yourself so quickly, maybe make small changes as you go and see how you feel. After all, you got pregnant while being veggie, so that's a healthy start? Anyway, wish you all the best, just do what feels right! xxx :hugs:

Sorry, this is gonna be long! I'm feeling chatty!

Wishing you all the best with your decision hun! I know what to eat and not to eat can be so stressful for pregnant ladies... seems like every book and every relative wants to make rules for what you can/should eat, then add to that your worries about eating the "right" healthy foods, your own own cravings, aversions and morning sickness and it all gets a bit much!

I was a vegetarian (no fish, just for the record) for about 5 years, but have been eating meat again for the last 5. Since falling PG I've been craving red meat like crazy, along with bacon. I'm trying to still eat a balanced diet too, but it's hard because meat and bread are the things that seem to settle best at this point for me. I figure it'll all balance out in the end, and I tend to think the cravings probably mean my body needs something.

More to your point, my old boss was a vegan since she was a teenager. When she fell PG at 32 she had mad cravings for steak and went back to eating meat. It worked for her and she never decided she wanted to go back to veganism. To each her own.

I also had a dear friend who was a veggie her whole adult life, but then when her DS was born in her early 30s she suffered with his terrible allergy to dairy, eggs and soy through her breastmilk. She wound up eating meat to make sure she and baby could have sustenance without aggravating his allergies. Not sure if she decided to go back to veggie once she was done breastfeeding.

If you're uncomfortable eating meat and your DH is worried about nutrients, I'd talk it over with your doc and find out what prenatals a semi-veggie like yourself should be taking. That way you can both be comfortable. :)

Best of luck!

my aunty was a veggie because she is allergic to poultry and just cut out all meat, she had been for over 20 years when she fell pregnant, and the way she broke to me that she was pregnant was by taking me into asda, buying some bacon and then going home and putting it in a sarnie for lunch, i was gobsmacked! :haha:
