Traditionally, Christmas is when the whole family gets together and eats turkey and pie and exchanges gifts and what not...
But we don't do that in my house.
We are still a 'new' family, having only been married for two years and our first baby on the way. This is DH's and my fourth Christmas spent together (our first Christmas in 2008, we were still kids and with our families). In 2009 and 2010, we tried the whole family gathering thing. It didn't work very well for us, just adding stress around what should be a really fun time of year. So last year, DH and I scrapped tradition and set out on our own. We watched movies in the theater all day (and paid for every single one!) and ate dinner at a local diner.
And you know what? We had a ton of fun!! No family drama or hurt feelings between us. We decided last year we would do the same thing every year. But now on year #2 and being heavily pregnant, I know sitting through 5 movies in a theater would be ridiculously uncomfortable. This year DH and I are staying home alone together and watching our own movies and playing video and board games together. Instead of the traditional holiday meal, I'm making my husband boozy cherry crepes for breakfast, then bacon/green onion/Parmesan/cream cheese stuffed mushrooms and garlic rosemary roasted chicken and potatoes and green beans for Christmas dinner.
Tonight, on Christmas Eve, instead of attending any family functions (hello drama!) we are going to a candlelit service at church, and then coming home and decorating our Christmas tree together, just the two (three counting baby!) of us. Normally Christmas trees are decorated far in advance of Christmas Eve, but we've been so busy prepping for Harrison's arrival and my husband has been working so much and I've been so tired that it hasn't gotten done yet. I think decorating the tree on Christmas Eve will be our new un-tradition as a family. I think it's a way to make decorating the tree and Christmas Eve special. And until my little boy is old enough to accompany us to the theater on Christmas Day, I really like the idea of a day at home as a little family of 3, opening gifts, watching movies, and playing board and video games. Eating roast chicken and stuffed mushrooms instead of the regular turkey and fixings.
Does anyone else out there buck the Christmas trends and do something out of the ordinary? How do you feel about it?
