Hello. I'm starting to ween off bfing...he eats the jarred baby custard like its goung out of style and i can get him to sweet potato that i puree myself but much and not with enthusiasm he does custard....i have lots of different purees...apples, pears, carrots, mango, oatmeal and fruit, banana...but he wont eat any of it...he'll take first bite, make a dusgusted face and fight every bite after that..his mouth closes in a mutinous line and turns his and will fuss...but he will gladly the custard, ice cream, yogurt....
I'm thinking he doesnt like the texture of the puree...i've looked into baby led weaning but i'm so paranoid about him chocking or where to start and what foods you should give etc...
BLW sounds fun and interesting and i think it has merit makes sense but that doesn't help my worries....
Anyone else feel this way or have babies that won't eat purees??

You'd probably feel better if you had a look of some you tube videos of a baby gagging. This is totally normal and what sometimes can happen when the baby is trying to bring the food to the front of their mouth.

Babies can choke even by giving them purees, it doesn't matter if the food is solid or softer.

If you are really worried you could take an infant CPR course but like I said above I'd check out some you tube videos too.

I had the same fear and I was a nervous wreck at first, but you'd be surprised at how well a baby manages.. If a peice is too big that they bite off or the texture doesn't appeal to them they gag a bit and out it comes. I've never had to intervene as yet (touch wood!), and my oh my how LO loves it!! Makes eating so pleasurable for them and all about discovery. Me and
Little one eat our meals together (the same thing now) and it's very enjoyable and fun.. For both of us!! And he eats loads! Lol. Thing is they have to learn eventually and the sooner the better.. The gag reflex isn't permanent and you're actually safer to start baby on finger foods whilst they still have this in built safety mechanism. I found that somewhat reassuring to know when I started xxx

no was never scared, I made a huge "coming of age" celebration out of it (which DD hated). I think the first month was kind of traumatic watching her gag and not freaking out but she loved it and by one she was using utensils to eat in a restaurant :) I think this is a very exciting (and tiring) milestone.

Gagging is very normal. But the custard is very sweet and maybe thats why he is refusing the other purees? Imo custard is a food to give rarely and after savory items have been introduced.

No, honestly I wasn't scared. A bit nervous first time round but then it all went fine and I would have been more scared to do purées with my second, as I really believe purées are far more dangerous (as they're made to bypass LO's natural defences against stuff going to the back of the mouth when not wanted). With BLW, the pieces are bigger so much easier to spit out... which are you more likely to have go down the wrong way, a drink or a piece of strawberry?

Perhaps we were just lucky but I don't think either of my kids have ever choked and I think my youngest gagged twice and my oldest just once... not that gagging is anything to be scared of.

Thanks everyone....now i have to see what he'll eat....any suggestions with whatto give him for BLW??

Cheesy omelette, pancakes, veggies (steamed in batons), fruit (banana is good, and melon, and raspberrys), toast with various toppings, rice cakes, home made pizza, sandwiches, scrambled eggs.. The list is endless! There is a "sticky" thread on finger food ideas-- I stole loads of ideas from that! Xxx
