Anyone had tests on nhs??

FS said she will prescribe Clomid if nothing is diagnosed in ultrasound and HSG. When I told I do ovulate every cycle, she said she would still prescribe. If I don't want Clomid, the next step is IVF it seems

Hi Ladies,

Hope everyone’s having a good week.

Keds and Gkmk – glad your appointments went ok, sounds like we could all do with some relaxation sessions to keep ourselves from stressing too much about TTC!! Good luck with your tests on Wed Han!

Keds, I have heard that iron can help boost fertility, I’m not sure how though! If you're ovulating ok then I'm sure it can't be causing much of a problem. Hopefully you should easily be able to get your levels up just with supplements. After my initial tests came back ok I started to worry more about bad news from DH sperm – does your husband have tests booked?

Kaychikan – sorry, I don’t know much about mirena & low progesterone either, sounds like it’s definitely worth asking about. Have you had blood tests done? I think spotting before your period and short LP can be a sign of low progesterone. Do you have any other signs?

I’m pretty sure I’m out this month! My temp dropped below the coverline this morning and AF cramps are here. :sad2: DH has promised to book SA as soon as he can get time of work next. FX’ed its soon!

Gkmk, do you clinic not do iui?
That's good to know about clomid, at least there's something else we can try anyway... But your right jaybo I think we all need to relax... Easier said that done! Thank you for wishing me luck, I'm more worried about the appointment than the results at the moment :( sure it'll all be fine, I'm just being silly.

Fx both keds and jaybo oh sperm test - although sure it'll be fine so don't stress as it won't help.

Xx

Hi all- I've lurked a bit on this thread because it's so informative so wanted to join in now that I have an appointment to see what the next steps for testing are for me.

I am 37 (38 next month) and got off BCPs in July 2013. So far my cycles have been really irregular and even though I've had some temperature shifts, changes in CP and CM and O pains when expected, I have yet to get a positive OPK and my periods are super light and short. My second cycle was 78 days long. I've also had mid-cycle bleeding. I've been on an off BCPs for years and have had irregular cycles in the past, but this is my first time TTC.

So far, my GP has looked at my cervix when I had mid-cycle bleeding and said it looked healthy, and also did blood tests to test hormones (and insulin?) when I had the long cycle which all came back 'normal' (I didn't get any numbers, I'm not even sure about what was included other than FSH because she mentioned that was ok specifically). I've had a smear test with a chlamydia test less than a year ago which came back all good. I don't have any symptoms of PCOS, thyroid issues or endo that I can tell. I think the next step are the blood tests on the different cycle days to see if I'm ovulating, but we'll see what she says next week. So far, she's said she thinks my body is regulating again after being on the pill, but she's also been good to check things out too so Fx I'll get more testing done soon.

My OH goes to a different GP than I do but is making an appointment today for a SA. He's never TTC either so has no idea about his fertility. He is pretty healthy and doesn't smoke or drink much alcohol, but he is also a keen cyclist! We've both been taking Pregnacare/Wellman conception since before we started TTC and we've both tried other supplements as well.

So- that is where I am at! I'll let you all know what happens with our appointments.

:dust: to all of you!

Welcome feezle, glad your found all the info informative... I really enjoy this blog because your on alone in the testing your going through and you get to hear other stories.
Yes I'd say your next steps would be for blood tests on different days... I had tests on day 1-3, I don't specifically know what they were for but they came back normal which is the main thing... Good news that your oh is getting a sa too.
My hubby is a very keen cyclist and had a sa when he was riding 3-6 hours a week (which to me is a lot) and his results came back normal. As from last week we are taking supplements to help, but as the ladies on here said omega is good for men.

Yes do keep us updated on your progress... wishing you loads of luck xx

Thanks!

They might need to force a period for me to get to CD1-3 before they can test!

That's good news about your DH and the cycling! Mine cycles to work most days, though not very far. He also goes mountain biking about once a week and sometimes does long road cycles on the weekends. He was going to be doing a week long cycle trip in the Pyrenees in June, so has been training for that, but now he's not sure if he'll be able to do it because he thinks he might have a small hernia.

Right now I think in addition to the Wellman conception, I think he's taking Omega-3s, Co-enzyme-10 and maybe maca too? Maybe other things- there's a load of supplements in our cupboard but I don't know what he still takes regularly!

Oh good luck with ur's and ur oh tests :) sure they'll be fine :))))

Brilliant that he's taking all those supplements :)

Hope u all have a lovely relaxing weekend and not thinking too much about baby making :)

Xxx

About a year ago he had glandular fever, but didn't know what it was so to try to get better, he started taking loads of supplements! So we've just added the Wellman one and changed a few of the others.

Gkmk, do you clinic not do iui?

Iui is not funded in England by NHS I think, may be that is why she said IVF, not sure. I am not keen on knowing about iui or IVF till Dec 2014.

Han- I'm so late on responding...I don't exercise regularly, but I keep thinking that I should. It is supposed to help. I had my HSG around day 8 of my cycle. They never said anything to me about not having sex before it, but I suppose it didn't matter because it was much earlier than ov and AF had just barely left, so there wasn't any time to BD. They did stress no unprotected sex after the HSG though.

My HSG was painless and I didn't have any painkillers beforehand. But, I'm really good at relaxing during normally uncomfortable procedures and I have a high pain tolerance, so take that with a grain of salt. I would take a couple of painkillers before the HSG, just in case (I would have, but I forgot).

The HSG goes: cold gel, speculum, balloon insertion/inflation to open the cervix (where most women feel the discomfort), insert catheter, inject dye (can also be uncomfortable for some), pictures taken..done.

It was kind of surreal. I was so nervous about the HSG, but when I got in (I went alone), the technician was like 'prop up your legs, move that modesty sheet out of the way and spread 'em.' lol! It was relatively quick. I was so focused on my breathing/relaxing that I was surprised when she said she had inflated the little balloon and had put the catheter in. I could only feel the dye when it reached my ovaries and I only felt a warm, heavy feeling briefly. I snuck a peak at the screen after she was done taking pictures of everything and I could see my tubes pretty clearly, so I was fairly certain everything was good in there before I left the appointment. I didn't get the official results until my next fertility appointment a few weeks later though.

I think they say no sex before and no unprotected sex after the HSG because there's always the chance you could catch the egg (if it's close enough to ov) and there's a higher chance of ectopic pregnancy after the HSG because it makes your tubes sticky with the dye. But, they say that the three months after the HSG can be really good for getting pregnant, because of the sticky.

I've had sore nipples during and after AF before. It's really weird and it did make me think 'what if I'm pregnant?'...but I wasn't and it faded pretty soon. I think it was just a hormonal imbalance or some extra progesterone hanging around...

Good luck on Wednesday!! :D

Keds - I haven't researched iron and fertility, but it can't hurt to take a mild iron supplement and get your levels up. I'll have a look sometime, since I have low iron levels occasionally.

Try not to worry about your hubby's results until they come in. It's possible he'll come back normal too and you'll join the ranks of unexplained infertility. It's not as satisfying as having a diagnosable problem you can tackle and throw meds at, but I think it does have a more positive outcome most of the time...it just takes a while longer than most.

Kay- I haven't heard much about the mirena, but I can imagine that your hormones would be out of whack after getting it out. Maybe they can prescribe you some synthetic progesterone to jump start your body's production of it. I hope you find some answers!

Gkmk- That's so weird that your FS said that the next step is IVF if you say no to Clomid. That seems like such an extreme jump, especially if she doesn't think anything is wrong. Did she talk about what you have to do to get IVF funded by your PCT? It's different in different areas of the UK, but I think to get it funded without IUI, you have to have something preventing you from getting pregnant the natural way. I would check into it when you're ready (hopefully it won't even need to be an option). IVF is so expensive unfunded.

But Clomid sounds like a nice, non-invasive way to TTC with a little help. If I could have scored some Clomid off of my FS, I would have been thrilled. He's a stickler for the new guidelines though, so he was like "the NHS doesn't recommend Clomid only for couples who are unexplained. Medicated IUI is much more effective and the recommended next step." But, I told DH if the IUI doesn't work, I'm going to ask for some while we save up for another shot. ;)

Fezzle- Welcome! :hi: I'm glad you're finding this thread helpful! I heard it can take up to six cycles for your body to regulate after getting off the pill. Hopefully, things will adjust soon and the blood tests will show you when you're ovulating so you can catch the egg. :) Definitely keep us updated!!

Hi I wonder if I can jump back in and ask a quick question. Myself and dh have started tests on thenhs and on my initial bloods have found a high prolactin level. Having retest on Tuesday but wondered if any of you ladies have had this problem?
Thank you

Ella thanks so much for your detailed message and support... They haven't said no unprotected sex afterwards to me... I'll have to ask them that question on Wednesday. Oh I hope that the dye makes my tubes so sticky and it helps towards getting pregnant (but at the same time were not counting the days or anything like that anymore... Just seeing what happens)
My next FS appointment isn't until April so I have a long wait!

How r you doing?

I hope they do give me clomid, as by the sounds of things and research that would be really helpful.

Ladders what time of blood test did you have? I don't know what prolactin is though - sorry can't really help xx

Hey guys so I had my hsg this morning... I was really scared... But it wasn't too bad! It's seemed like a large procedure because there was 4 people in the room, but the worst pain was just like bad period pains. Anyway all the results came back good, which is the main thing.

When I left I was told that I would be prescribed clomid, but then I said I am ovulating and then told to call my consultant secretary to find out what's next, so I am waiting to do that.

Any other news for you ladies?

Xx

Had more cd21 bloods yesterday on my 5th round of clomid back in hospital in march to get results after my next round of clomid X

Can't remember what I last updated on here but IUI #1 was a bust :(

AF started today so just waiting for my new schedule and prescription for more Norethisterone before we try again.

Glad the HSG went well han.

Oh gem I've been thinking of you, I didn't want to ask in case you didn't want to talk about it... I'm sorry to hear it wasn't successful! Are you ok? Can they up the dosage? Think positive because it could be next month. :)

I'm sorry if I'm asking a question I've asked in the past, but gem, after you had your hsg, what happened next for you? I called our FS and was told that I will get a letter and prescription for clomid... I guess that will double the chances of getting pregnant each month.

Xx

Don't worry han, I'm obviously disappointed but I'm ok. My next concern is the new schedule. They plan to carry out the iui on March 10th but my other half returns from a stag do that day so I'm concerned about quality!

The dosages themselves were fine I think. Any higher and I was have had too many follicles and a cancelled iui. It just wasn't our time.

After my HSG I was also put on Clomid. I can't remember how long after but it would have been a matter of months, if that. Have they diagnosed you with unexplained infertility? I read mixed reviews on how well Clomid worked for this but it's just the push that some women need to get their BFP.

I heard that it takes 3 months to
Improve sperm quality so surely it takes 3 months to rescue sperm quality... If this is the case then perhaps it doesn't matter for ur oh sperm quality after the stag weekend!!

That's a good attitude to have.... It wasn't our time... I think throughout this process us ladies need to remain positive and patient (I am the most inpatient person and I think the reason why this process is taking longer than normal is because I'm beinb learnt a life lesson... Everything happens for a reason). You will have a baby though, but it's taking a little longer

No I haven't been diagnosed yet... Apparently I will recieve a letter and prescription... But my next appointment at the FS is in April... I asked today if there was an earlier appointment and told that I'm lucky to have April as there are appointments being made for July!!
I've done some reading on clomid too.., it's mixed messages... Some say it has pushed them to fall, others say that it hasn't made much difference.

Xx
