Anyone on the pill while Breastfeeding?

At my six week postnatal appointment my doctor said it was okay to be on the pill while breastfeeding, but it may slow down my milk supply so I chose not to go on it. Does anyone have any experience with this-(true-not true)? Thanks!!

Hi Alexas Mommy, I'm breastfeeding and chose to take the progesterone only pill (mine is called Micronor) and there was no mention of slowing down milk production. I've been taking it for about 6 or 7 weeks now and not noticed any bad changes to my milk.

I had a choice of this pill (which you have to take at approx the same time every day), a coil or just to use condoms.

I took the morning after pill two weeks ago and IT KILLED MY MILK!!!

Thanks so much!! maybe I will just ask my regular family doctor for more information on it before I make a decision... that or just wait four more months when I won't be breast feeding anymore... Thanks!!

yes there are certain ones you can go on i know i cant go on the one i went on before which was microginon(not sure if spelt right) but my nurse advised me the progesterone only pill so im going to see my doctor next week about it at the mo im just using condoms xxx

The combined pill (containing both oestrogen and progesterone) is known to affect milk supply. The progesterone-only pill doesn't seem to affect breastfeeding. I've been on Micronor since my six week check up with no problems.

I was told that you can take progesterone birth control while breastfeeding as well. I don't know if I want to try it though.

I am concerned at this point that the hormones will affect babies later development, and also, the progesterone only pill does not have the greatest effectiveness. I think I am going to skip the pill until after breastfeeding and use other forms of protection to be on the safe side!!
