hi all,

just after anyones advice or experience.

my lo as been on sma staydown for reflux accomponied with extreme pain for a few months and as done really well with this milk. i was even able to stop meds however the last week he as become increasingly sick and seems to be in pain again. i also suspect he is teething and have read this can aggravate reflux.

a couple of days ago i decided maybe i could thicken his milk slightly in hope to help with this. i started to add half of scoop of carobel to 8 oz of milk which slightly thickened it a little more and he took it like a dream and bingo the sickness and discomfort stopped.

the same day i started to do this i emailed sma just to make sure it was ok. in the meantime i carried on with the carobel as it was really helping. today they have emailed me back saying it is not advisable as it can be hard to digest even thou he as pood really well whilst using it. i have now stopped after 2 days as there email as worried me. now my lo is uncomfortable and sick again.

as anyone ever used a thickener with this milk.
would you go off advise given or continue with what seems to be helping your lo.

sorry for the long post, just at a bit of a loss again :(

thanks in advance x

Sorry have no experience of this particulalry but Sam also had reflux and was prescribed Carobel which he had with SMA First Infant. Really really helped. I personally wouldn't mix SMA staydown with Carobel if SMA advise against it - but that's only because it would make me nervous; maybe speak to your HV and find out her opinion?

I'm sure you don't want to mess with LO's formula too much but have you considered trying just SMA First Infant with the Carobel instead? It may be the Carobel helps more than the staydpwn formula?

I wouldn't mix carobel with staydown either. You could visit your gp to see if they will prescribe a different milk for reflux - something like Enfamil AR. Or like the PP said, try carobel with regular formula. If LO is in pain, he might need an acid inhibitor like ranitidine. This would help stop the burning, and although it wouldn't help the sick, at least he wouldn't be in pain. x x

my lo as been on carobel before with aptamil 1st and ranitidine. this combination did help with the refulx but he had awful stomach cramps and wind. i swapped this combination for the sma staydown and he thrived.

im guessing he is just having a backward step due to teething. i have thought today about trying him with normal sma with carobel but think i might hang fire a few more week to see if things improve.

like you said i think i would worry too much having been advised against it. shame really as it really seemed to help x
