My LO was on powdered formula and has been since being 3 days old, he's now nearly 3 weeks old. He suffers badly with wind, and doesn't like to bring it up. I think the cartons have helped this, anyway..

When he was on powdered formula, he would constantly be hungry! he would have a 4oz bottle, be winded, and then 5 minutes later be hungry and have another 2oz say.. the midwife seems to think this is fine, but i was a little concerned as i didnt think it was right that he was feeding so much! we started using the ready made cartons as we had one and LO was crying his eyes out so didnt want to wait to make a powdered feed. and he spaced out his 4oz feeds over 4 hours.. he had one feed at 12, then 4, then 9, he did however need a oz top up at 10:10. My question is why when he was on powdered formula did he constantly feed and didnt seem to be satisfied after a bottle? where as now hes quite content, and happy with feeding every 4 hours or so?

Hey i am so glad i came accross this thread!!
I am really sorry i don't have any answers for your question :( But you seem like the perfect person to answer my questions! :D

I was thinking of using aptamil and i wanted to know the difference between the powder and the ready made cartons. To me it seems to make more sense to use the ready made cartons, is there a reason people dont just use these instead of powder? I have a million other questions but i would appriciate if you could give me any advice :)

Thank you x

I think the main reason people use the powder instead of the cartons is just the fact that its so much more expensive for the ready made stuff than it is the powder.. i think thats the only real reason! Any questions you have just ask, ill try help as much as i can! LO is only 3 weeks though so dont have much experience myself just yet! But if i can help i will :) x

I dont know the answer but DS always settled better on ready made formula so once he was on a set feeding pattern (ie minimal wastage) we switched to ready made all the time. We switched brands though to save a few pennies and DS didnt notice any difference.

yea at the moment it seems like he just wants that.. so just using ready made at the moment, but it is very expensive, especially when like you said, he does waste some off each feed!

I use just the ready made cartons of aptimil. I breast fed til my LO was 4 months then switched over to formula. She has about 5 or 6 of these a day. I think it's more satisfying because it's got a higher fat content. Don't quote me on that though - I'm sure i read it somewhere. I like the ready made cartons because you know they are sterile and they are just so convenient. I usually get mine at tesco - think they are 69p each. So if she has 5 a day it costs £3.45 to feed her. The way i look at it is i saved loads of money breast feeding for 4 months. Now she's nearly 6 months she'll soon be on food so the milk expense won't last forever. It's going to cost me more than what it costs in milk to feed her food each day - if i give her decent fresh food which i intend to. My 22 month old has toddler ready made aptimil too. She has two bottles of that a day but it's only 55p a bottle. I just think if you think do whatever makes you and your LO happy. Just try to save elsewhere. That's what we do!

Yea i was looking at the difference in fat content, vitamin content etc. the pre made cartons seem to have a lot more than the powder.. Yea lucky you for saving money! I could only breast feed for 3 days then LO just wouldnt accept it :( Yea thanks :D

Are you finding the powder mixing properly with aptamil? I switched ds off aptamil as there was always loads of debris in the bottle and the teats would get clogged, meaning ds was sucking and getting nothing but frustrated and tired.

Ready mixes tend to be thicker formulas too, so it may be your lo prefers a thicker mix. If you wanted to go with powder rather than ready mix then SMA is a thicker formula.

Yea the powder for me seems to mix fine.. i have Avent bottles.. I have thought about moving onto another powder.. but LO suffers with really bad wind, and sometimes constipation i don't know if it will upset his tummy.

Dd suffered awfully with wind and pains. In the end we switched her from cow and gate to aptamil and she was a completely different child. She still got wind, but not at the level she did before (or at least she coped with it better).

Aww Thank you!!

Yeah i noticed the price difference.. I think that the ready made seems good for on the go and i will be on the go a lot with going back to work quite early so i think that will probably what is best for me. I still have a lot to learn about feeding yet.. I'm clueless! But i am going to some classes next week so hopefully i will come out of them a bit more clued up. I don't like the idea of powder, i always imagine it to be quite bitty?x
