Are heat-pads safe to use?

I was wondering if heat pads are safe to use on your ribs and back?

I would have thought they weren't safe to put on your abdomen but are they okay in other areas?

i asked my midwife this as the pack said not suitable for use in pregnancy and she said they just put that on there to cover there backs and they are fine. she said as long as its not too hot it was fine to use hot watter bottle/heat pack.

Thy offer heat packs on our labour and delivery wards so must be ok?
