From the very beginning my doctor said no caffeine. I gave in because she was pretty resonable with most other things, so I have rarely had any caffeine since day 1. That being said, I am so tired all the time, it doesn't seem to matter what I do, or when I go to bed. I can barely drag myself out of bed in the morning, and I am barely functioning. I could go through the motions of the day if that were all I have to do, but I work in an office, and I am so swamped with paperwork, but I'm too tired to concentrate on anything. All I want is a cup of coffee so I can at least get 2 hours of work done. Everyday that goes by, the pile of work I need to do just gets higher, and we are short staffed so there is no one to help me. (I can never tell whether it's the tiredness or the hormones that make me so dramatic, but lately everything feels like the end of the world )

Anyway, I would appreciate it if people could give me their opinions on caffeine. Keep in mind, I'm literally talking about one small cup of coffee per day. Thanks.

I haven't had any coffee apart from decaf since I got my BFP, but I have had the occasional can of Coke, or cup of tea, which both have caffeine. With one small cup you should be fine. Was there a particular reason your doctor told you to cut it out completely?
One thing that I've found helps me at work is drinking loads of water. I used to have one or 2 cans of Red Bull a day to get me through my shift, but water seems to be working just as well since I got over the initial caffeine withdrawal.

Yes I am still drinkin coffee they say the main dangers are early pregnancy!! X x

My OB told me the same thing about caffeine :-/ I've made the switch to decaf from day one and it's been torture not having the pick-me-up in the morning to get me going. But, I understand the risks of consuming caffeine during pregnancy and am willing to sacrifice. I just accept the tiredness as a lovely pregnancy symptom. Good luck getting through!

I think it's just her policy for all patients, no caffeine. But I don't think there was any particular reason for me specifically. I just so miss that jolt in the morning to get me going!

I think the rule is no caffeine for the first 12 weeks then you're restricted to a certain amount per day which I find easy to follow - decaff gets me through the day just the warm drink makes me feel better. It's pretty bad to rely on caffeine if you're so tired though can't be good for you to only feel awake after a cup of caffeine. Have you had your iron levels checked?

I think my iron actually is a little low. I have to have monthly blood tests due to being on blood thinners, and last time they mentioned to me my hemoglobin had dropped from 13 to 11.5. The doctor didn't say anything, so I just assumed it was still within normal range. Maybe this is something I should bring up when I go back in a few weeks.

I don't drink coffee but I do drink Mt. Dew one or two days a week. I have read not to take in more than 200 mg. of caffiene. I had a miscarriage when I was drinking no caffeine at all and this one I am drinking some and am having no problems. Hmmmm :) I included a link for you to read up on. I think you just have to watch it and take it in moderation.

Oh I'm really bad. I drink tea, coffee (instant and Starbucks, though I usually count starbucks as 2 coffee's) and coke. I dropped it right down in first tri and now keep it to about 4 mugs a day, bubs is fine :-) x

I didn't drink too much caffeine during the first trimester, maybe a can of coke once a week or so. Now that I'm in my second and baby is doing great I might have a cup or two of coffee a few mornings a week...I love my dark roast!

I was told no more than 100-200 mg of caffeine a day, my choice as to how to split it up.... I'm enjoying a cup of green tea right now :) I am not showing so I can still order a half-caf latte without getting the stink eye from the baristas!

I remember going through my entire first pregnancy without a cappuccino only to find out through random conversation with my midwife that it's not at all bad to have a cup a day. :p I was about to pop at that point so I was like, what? :( I'll have the occasional cup, although lately no way because it's WAY too hot and humid. I'll have a glass of soda every now and then too. Moderation is key! :)

I gave up coffee while TTC and all the way up until this week. My favorite blend came in at a coffee company and we ordered a 5 lb bag of it :O I drink half a cup of regular coffee in the morning. I usually can't handle much more than that!

I think I might go get a small ice coffee later. I can't find any reason why one cup every so often would do any harm. Thank you ladies!

baby #6 here, and I've never given up caffeine during pregnancy. I don't drink pots of coffee or cases of coke a day, but will have a cup here or there of coffee, and at least one coke, sometimes two per day.

Every blue moon I have a cup but it usually makes me sick to my sto ach when I do try to drink it.

Yes, though I do limit my consumption to one latte or cappuccino with only a single shot (only 30-70 mg of caffeine) or a cup of 'half caf' when I'm at home (half regular and half decaf). It's not every day. Actually, probably most days I have tea (which has roughly the same amount of caffeine as my coffees do anyway). On rare occasions when we're out, I might have a full cup of regular coffee. I almost never drink soda or eat chocolate (never really have), so I'm happy to enjoy my coffee when I want to. In moderation, it's completely safe. The studies that have been done on caffeine and pregnancy really only showed poor health outcomes (mainly low birth weight) for babies whose mums drank more than 5 cups a day every day. I doubt most of us will be drinking anywhere close to that (I think that would probably kill me before it would hurt baby!). So enjoy it if you want it. Though as far as feeling tired all the time, I can't say it helps. I still feel exhausted constantly!

My doctor didn't say "no caffeine" at any point. In fact I think she assumes I AM drinking it as when I went in yesterday she asked about tender breasts and said "Not too much caffeine, it makes the pain worse".

The literature I got from the doctor has a weeks' meal plan and almost all of the days include a cup of coffee at breakfast. It mentions that you should not go above 300 mg per day (the number I usually hear is 200 mg). I live in Canada, so I guess it is different everywhere.

As for me, I drink about 40 mg of caffeine from tea or cola about 5 days a week. I don't really feel too affected by it, but I think it is a subtle pick-me-up.

I still have a coffee or two each day :) Im sure in the UK we are told no more than around 80g of caffine?
