my boy is called Gael, pronounced Gah-el (two sillabes, stressed in the a) but most ppl pronounce it Gail (as the female name)

It's spelling here too that people have a problem with. 90% off cards received were to Darcy not Darcey. I let people away with it as theyd only heard the name. However, we then received christmas cards back from people with it spelt wrong. This is after them getting thank you cards and christmas cards with us obviouslt using the correct spelling. I didn't think I'd picked a name that she'd have to spell out constantly her whole life!

Yep I find people spell his name wrong a lot too! His names Finley, but we've had Finlay (also very common), but also Finn-Leigh and Finally Now I would pronounce that as in 'it's finally here!'.

Opposite problem here! Our son is Finlay and always get the ey spelling and the Fin-lay (long a like in play) pronounciation. Our fault really for giving him the -ay spelling but we pronounce it Finlea - so not really emphasising the y bit iykwim. It really made me question that we'd spelt his name wrong ourselves We also got tons of cards to Findlay / Findley this christmas. Autocorrect always corrects Finlay to Finally too!

My only half regret about his name was not realising he will spend his whole life spelling his full name out. Our surname has at least 10 different variations in its spelling.

It looks like people really struggle with all the Finley/Finlay variations!

Also Lauraemily my oh is Alex and it drives him crazy when he is called Alexander. We've had mortgage papers and all sorts of official things come through with the wrong name on.

Evelyn pronouced Ev-Eh-Lyn

and Ivy Emelia, its the Emelia people say wrong, they pronounce an A not an E.

I adore the name Evelyn. I would consider it if I ever had a girl. Thing is, I have an Auntie Evelyn pronounced 'Eve-Lynn' with emphasis on the Eve part. So I automatically read the name like that! However I MUCH prefer 'Ever-Lyn'

After reading this thread I'm pleased I called LO 'Jack' - cant really go wrong there!

My finn is finlay james too and my mil spells it finally finiley or findlay. Really?? She also called isla lyla. Idiot.

My two have fairly straightforward names (Charlotte and Nathaniel). There are never any problems with Charlotte, but sometimes people whose first language isn't English struggle with Nathaniel as I think sometimes they have just never heard of the name. Also, it can be spelled incorrectly at times but it doesn't bother me - it's my fault for choosing a "complicated" name!

That's something that does amuse me actually - people who give their children normal sounding names but spell them differently, and then get annoyed when people spell them wrong! There's a Haeleigh in a baby group I go to - but if you'd only ever heard her name spoken out loud (Hayley) then why would you think it would be spelled like that?! Her mum gets REALLY stroppy if someone gets it wrong!

I think there is three Finlay James on here! James is his Dad's middle name. Some idiot did try to call him FJ but we killed that off pretty quickly.

People spell Anabella, Annabella often. I wouldnt mind as at first I guess that would be the presumed spelling. But I still get some close friends and family spelling it with two n's.

My HV calls her Annabel. I know Anabella is a variation of the name but I really dont like the name Annabel. I havent corrected her on it yet as I dont want to be rude. However, in front of her, I have made sure I call Anabella by her name several times, but it hasnt clicked with her.

3 years on and we still have problems with lyssa's name.
her consultant regularly calls her amelia, which isnt even close.
her name is pronounced ah-liss-uh
we get all sorts though. most common is ah-lisa
but allison and amelia pop up alot too.
what gets me is that people can pronounce lyssa (which is what we call her) absolutely fine, but stil the "A" infront and people struggle?
