Is it true you can't eat this when pregnant? It's on one of my aps on my phone. Just can't see why I wouldn't be allowed this.

i've never heard this,.i'm sure it's fine as long as you wash it?

Surely it's just the same as buyin all the individual things and making up a salad? :S lol x

I think it's because of the listeria risk and chemicals used to wash the leaves so that any bugs are killed off. It often sells as being pre-washed.

I must admit, though, I don't get why people buy it - it takes about 30 seconds to chop up a lettuce :haha:

Found this :) I suspect this is the reason why xxx

Unwashed fruits and vegetables, salad bars, and raw vegetable sprouts

Washing fruits and vegetables before eating them is always a good idea, but it's especially important during pregnancy.

The March of Dimes suggests you steer clear of salad bars (and packaged spinach, lettuce, and so on), which can carry Listeria-causing bacteria. Pregnant women should forgo raw vegetable sprouts (such as alfalfa, clover, and radish) for the same reason.

Raw produce, like meat, can be host to dangerous bacteria. If you're not planning to cook a piece of fruit or a vegetable, a good rinse with warm water and/or soap will kill off most bacteria.

So just wash it and don't worry :) x

I got told with Lo not to only use fresh but this time they say it is fine as long as you wash it 1st

i heard this before it will probs be something to do with washing process as fruit and veg that hasnt been washed properly can pose a threat due to toxoplasmosis which lives in soils that veg is grown in

as a pp said i dont even see the point of these its cheaper to buy a whole lettuce which make more and takes 2 seconds to chop i just chuck it in a bowl of water and swill it round then dry it on a clean tea towel :-)

My midwife brought this up and said that as long as it is washed first it is fine -even the ones that say "washed and ready to eat".

Honestly, wash them carefully and you'll be fine.

I agree, wash it first and then it's no different to salad that hasn't been prewashed and you washed it yourself. I think the risk is with "washed and ready to eat" is that it might not have been washed well enough.

My mw said if im going to buy anything that says 'pre-wqshed & ready to eat' always re-rinse just incase,

To those of you thinking we are too lazy to "chop up a lettuce" I will interject that not everyone eats lettuce in a salad. I am a salad junkie, but I hate lettuce. I have baby spinach & mixed greens, and good luck finding that most places in any form other than in a bag.

I feel a little bad now... I don't always wash pre washed salad :( Well glad I read this! Guess I know what i'll need to do now.

I eat it all the time (and dont wash it first either). Cant say I intend to start washing either. Theres probably more chance of me being knocked down but a bus than getting a bug from a bag of rocket! x

I feel the same, the risk must be so incredibly small.

I have never washed my vegetables with soap before... I usually rinse everything extremely well and rub the outside vigorously with my fingers. I hope that's enough..

I asked my doctor about this a month ago and he said that it is healthier to buy a head of lettuce and cut it up yourself. So, that's what I do :) You can also buy spinach that is not in a bag if you prefer that instead of lettuce.

Ergh, i can't stand lettuce, it tastes so boring to me! Obviously its cheaper to buy a lettuce if you like the lettuce salads but i like the ones with rocket etc in, i personally don't see the point in trying to get all the different types of salad leaves to try to recreate it, its gotta be cheaper just buying it in the bag, hehe.

Can't say i ever wash them either....oops. But so far i am ok :)

Me too. I hate normal lettuce. Iceberg is ok occasionally but I like lambs lettuce and rocket etc. I would never eat normal lettuce. It tastes minging!

Thanks everyone. Will just wash it then if I do have it. And I know it only takes a minute to chop up a lettuce but it's not as nice as the bagged type and I can never find that on it's own - not that I would buy it anyway! Perhaps I am too lazy!

i dont wash veg with soap errrgh i bet it makes raw veg stuffs taste mingin i just chuck in a bowl of water and rinse it then either chop and eat or dry and put on sarni
i must say though i only wash lettuce cabbage stuff like that if its pre packed fruit and the rest of it i dont bother if its of market and people been touching it then i wash fruit but thats the only time

Ha. I actually had a salad about 2 hours ago.

Mixed bag lettuce leaves. Cucumber. Carrot. Beatroot and a chopped up apple.

The only thing I washed was the lettuce leaves and even then I just rinsed them under water. Obviously the carrot i peeled.

I really wouldnt worry. Its salad stuff for god sake. I think things in UK must be alot more relaxed cause I never got told by my doctor not to eat pre bagged salad.. and we are also find to eat deli meats.

As for washing veg with Soap? Eugh yuk? Surely the chemicals in soap are gonna be far worse for you to ingest that anything that is on the veg/salad...

Hahaha I've never washed any veg/salad with soap - are we talking soap as in fairy liquid or like dove/imperial leather? :haha: Yuk!
