About an hour and a half ago I had a huge gush of blood. Loaded up the kids and headed to the hospital/OB office. They took me in right away, did an ultrasound and baby looked fine. Measuring 10w0d heartbeat 175 bpm, wiggling and happy.

They looked for SCH or any clots in my uterus, polyps, cysts, but found nothing. The ultrasound looked perfect. However while at the OB office I continued to bleed heavily and pass clots. I've been referred to the high risk specialists on Thursday, and am on bed rest. In the meantime was wondering if anyone has any ideas what might be going on?

They said it's too early to diagnose previa, and they wouldn't check to see if I was dilated because they said baby was fine and is showing no signs of distress. Would appreciate any theories

Gushing blood is almost always SCH or previa. However since u are fairly early I don't know what it could possibly be... Hopefully a high risk OB can conduct a more detailed ultrasound? Hope all is ok xx

I have heard of women who have the baby implant near a large blood vessel, and then it breaks when baby gets big enough. At least in the few stories I've heard, it heals and things go on okay. Hopefully it's something like that. Good luck.

Laila I was afraid of that. We know it's not an SCH, so I'm very scared that it's previa, but I've only had two C-sections so I'm hoping the odds are in my favor.

I think the MFM/high risk consultants will be able to do a more detailed ultrasound maybe, or maybe they have a higher resolution machine? I'm not sure what my OB hopes to accomplish by sending me there. She said there is a chance that they will be able to catch something the OB office can't.

ETA: I don't know if this is a good sign, but I don't see a cervix near the placenta in this pic. I hope that means the placenta is well away from my cervix!

Taramum thanks for checking in. Had my MFM scan today and baby is doing just fine. They still have no explanation for the bleed. They ruled out both subchorionic hematoma and placenta previa. He says it sounds like a chunk of placenta simply fell off. Pretty scary but he said there isn't anything they can do right now except wait.

Baby looks wonderful! I am 9 weeks today and have been spotting for ages but I've started to bleed lightly yesterday. Had a scan 2 days ago and all was fine....first tri is so worrying!

It is! Do they have any explanation for your spotting/bleeding? I have spotted this whole pregnancy too--since 4 weeks. Tuesday was just the first time I was gushing red blood. When I showed the MFM doctor a pic of the bleed yesterday, he said, 'Wow, that's actually a lot of blood. I'm not used to seeing that.'

No explanation at all. There was nothing on the scan to indicate any problems. I'm trying to keep positive but it's not easy x

Same exact thing here. I hate how okay doctors are with just saying "we have no idea" and not taking it any further. I asked him yesterday... uh, do I need to be on bed rest? pelvic rest? no lifting?

And he was just like, pelvic rest yes, but I can't answer the other questions because I don't know what caused the bleed. And then he added, in most cases of first trimester bleeding, the cause is never found. All he was able to tell me for sure is that I'm now at risk for PPROM and PTL. Greeaaaattt!
