Breast Feeding Doll?

I found this topic really interesting! To be perfectly honest, my initial reaction was that it is a bit weird and I would feel embarrased if my child owned one of these dolls.

Upon questioning myself as to why I felt like that, I couldn't help but feel that it was the wrong reaction. I think it's beneficial for everyone that we start dispelling the taboo around breastfeeding, and also that our society start seeing breasts as something natural and nurturing, rather than as sexual. I think in cultures where women are bare-breasted mostly all of the time - this kind of thing wouldn't be an issue.

But then saying that, the fact is that we do live in this society as it is. Although I'm positive it's not too late to revert back to a more natural view of breasts I don't personally know if I agree that this is appropriate to the times we live in.

It's really really interesting to hear everyone's opinions/reactions!

i think it's a good idea to encourage BF; a lot of people seem to think that BF doesn't give the baby adequate nutrition  so it would be nice to have a generation of girls grow up thinking it's normal. However, I don't see why you have to buy a special (and probably overpriced) doll for that. And I think it's weird that they give the kid a nursing top that opens to reveal the nipple, and it makes slurping noises.

In all honesty, I don't see why a girl can't play with a normal doll though; you can still hold it to your nipple; why do you need a special one?

I think that's my main dislike too, tbh. I don't find it inappropriate or sexual or any of those things. I just find it, like other dolls that mechnically mimic babies, a bit unnecessary. I think that the people who design dolls and often the adults that buy them forget the capacity that children have for imagination when they come up with dolls that 'do' things.

ETA: otoh I WOULD have bought it if I could have ordered it easily for my dd because she saw it online (while I was watching a youtube ad for it) and asked for it. She was 7 though and it appealed to her in the same way as the other mechanical dolls that tend to lose their batteries for a few hours at a time when they start to grate on my nerves

If my sister was to have it she would think it would be silly, because she has only ever seen me express, and has never seen anyone breastfeed.

I dont know what to think myself!

What a strange one! I don't think it sexualises kids at all, but I do think it is weird. Not sure about it at all!

:nope: No, I don't really like the idea of it TBH. It wouldn't bother me if my little girl started to pretend to BF her doll as that is how children learn, they explore concepts through play. But to buy a doll and actively encourage it? I think it would be a waste of money for a start. I bottle fed all my dolls as a child but I plan to breast feed with LO, it doesn't really make much of a difference. My brothers used to shoot each other with guns as children but they would never in a million years join the army or shoot someone for real!

Bandura did an experiment where he showed a 2 groups of children 2 different videos, one of adults hitting some bobo dolls and another of the adults hugging them. When the children were then left with the dolls they would mimic the behaviour they saw. There have been loads more studies very simerlar, just do a google! However it didn't mean that that one video made the child violent or pacifist. More just influenced their behaviour in a short term way.

Children aren't sponges who just soak up information and abide by it for the rest of their lives. Giving a child a breast feeding doll does not mean they will breast feed as adults :flower: xx

i dont think i would buy that if i had a daughter. It's great for children to see breastfeeding as natural but for a little girl to do that i'd find it a little odd to be honest. Seems a bit creepy to give that to a child in my opinion x

my neices are expecting my baby to pop out my belly button... theres some things they dont need to be taught nor do they need to know at that age lol

I dislike the peeing dolls too, they just make a mess. I know its realistic but kids just don't need that kind of thing xx

wow creepy? theres nothing creepy about breastfeeding! seems ok for a doll to have a bottle but no equal for breastfeeding which isnt really saying its great for young ones to see breastfeeding if your calling it creepy a little girls mimicking breastfeeding woman.

i never said there was anything creepy about breastfeeding itself. I plan to bf so i'm not knocking it and if you read what i said i actually said it's great for children to see bf as natural but i just dont think young girls need to strap on an apron with pretend "nipples" and breastfeed a special doll for it.

If a i had a daughter and she had a doll and mimicked breastfeeding with that then that's her choice and i wouldn't take it away from her and tell her to stop but i wouldn't purposely go out and buy this doll for her to do it. The thought of buying this doll for that sole purpose IS creepy to me, NOT bf itself. that's my opinion and i'm entitled to it x

Children should get the choice, not be presured into BFing their dolls lol! As I said, what they do now will give them little influence on what they will do in 25 years time. Lead by example if you want to encourage it. Fake nipples and a doll which makes sucking noises aint going to do very much other than make visitors feel a bit weird!xx

but they always come with bottles, formula feeding so thats ok but breastfeeding isnt? what choice is that then.

I dont think its creepy not one bit. It shouldnt even be made a deal of but its so unnatural to some and "creepy" it is made a deal of.

not all dolls come with bottles...when i was growing up not one of my dolls had any kind of feeding equipment with it so who's to say i'd give my daughter a doll with a bottle?? i feel you're just nit picking at others because some people have opposing views to you which isn't very necessary

It isnt Nit picking when all I feel it should be excepted as equal if its ok to have bottles with dolls it should be ok to have a breastfeeding one, And all the dolls I seen come with bottles but the last time I looked was when I was a child and my sis who is younger than me had dolls with bottles.

ok and that's your opinion and that's fine but not everybody needs to have the same opinion as everyone else. That's why this thread is asking people what they think because people are bound to have different opinions. So i think it's a bit unfair that you question other people's opinions when it doesn't affect you in any way.

of course it's unnatural. no one has said that breastfeeding is unnatural, but a child breastfeeding? it doesn't happen, so how could it be "natural"?

i just think you're arguing for argument's sake.

Thats ok just trying to get my opinion across I just wish the two where equal and there wasnt a taboo around it.

Seeing children looking after babies is unnatural also. xemmax. If children are going to play with dolls why not show them another way to feed as well as bottle which is more excepted even by some in this thread.
