ahhhhhhhhhhhhh that makes sense, buttercream on fruit cake would be weird! Thanks x

nice pirate cake!
Thanks Jane looking at a few on ebay I may have to invest.. theyre not that dear .. can get one for about £20 I have worked out.. but then again I can get a 4 tier or even 3 really and just place extra cupcakes on the bottom layer spilling onto the table effectively if they dont fit.

I have been thinking and if I have a square cake at the top tier it would look funny having round cupcakes underneath..

NOW.. I have a HUGE ask..

Where can I get SQUARE cupcake/muffin Cases? Looked on ebay and theyre arent many.. monstly in colours that dont go with my white/blue stars theme :dohh:

Do any of you fabulous cake makers have an online supplier you can recommend? May have a look at the decorations and sprinkles too!
xx

shiv, fantastic pirate cake!! i cant see no mess...dont worry it looks perfect!

andrea thats a fab idea about the ribbon, but the lemons create the border like a ribbon would IYKWIM?
heres the cake:

tsia, ive seen square cases but i think they were silicone ones?

jac, i havent seen any fruit cakes in costco...actually i havent seen much of anything to benefit a baker really....they have bags of sugar etc, but to be honest they are the same ones u can get from tescos/asda, and ive worked out its literally a difference of a few pence so easier to get it in your usual weekly shop! x

wow nuttymummy that cake turned out fab!
How did you fix the lemon slices on in the end?

LOL tsia...thats not mine....thats the picture of the cake the woman would like...
but she wants orange slices and lemon slices on it, and im going to put some sort of orange flower on the top.
just got to figure out what i can do about the slices.

if theres one thing ive learned from cake making..NEVER EVER underestimate things n just expect things to be 'fine' because something will always go wrong LOL
which is why im worrying about the slices of lemon being on the cake overnight...i know for a fact they will start to melt the fondant n ill get yellow n orange juice streaks down the sides LOL

this one is mine though!! LOL

im going to have to get some proper lighting soon, i took this photo whilst it was all dark, grey, n stormy outside so instead of showing it a real baby pink, it looks alot darker :(
he liked it though n it had glitter on it :)

Tracey thats gorgeous!
ahh thanks for the insight to costco, I'll stick with my supplier then..at least I know his fruit cakes are delicious!
quick question...fruit cakes, when I buy them they come as they would out of a tin, so do you girls cut the top/sides off before you marzipan/ice it?

Icing wedding cakes....do you use just normal fondant as my MIL says I need to use royal icing?

wow shiv that pirate cake is really cute!!

nutty - the lemons on that cake have white bits sprinkles on so are they not candied?

is royal icing the hard stuff? i dont like it so i wont have that on my wedding cake but then again me and OH both hate fruit cake so we want sponge and fondant for our cake

OK.. on the quest for SQUARE CUPCAKE CASES!!! //

I found this site through google.. https://www.kitchencapers.net/shopstore/papercases.htm

And min order for overseas is $50,.00 singapore dollars!!!

I want them so much, theyre so perfect that I would consider making the order and shoving the ones I dont use on ebay to recoup some money back! lol
I am that desperate I emailed them asking them if they would consider listing on ebay! lol
Hey whats ebay singapore? never thought of that!

oHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HELP!!! :(

50.00 SGD = 23.7305 GBP thats the exchange rate, soo maybe be someone on here could have a look through and you could split the order then, ill have a look now see if theres anything good! x

Jac I prefer fondant on fruit cakes with the marizipan its easier. But Royal icing to me now adays is quite 80's.Maybe ask the person what they would prefer?

Thanks to the lovely Georgie, I now have some silicone cupcases!!

- Does anyone know how I use them>? lol Do you just peal them off when cooked? daft question really?? xx

Yeah I just use the silicone ones when making them for us, so thae cases go straight in the sink, I haven't used them for ages though

OK.. been having a play around today.
After I went into town to see how much a fruit cake would be as a main cake for the christening and nearly fell to the floor when the bakery quoted me £70 for an 8inch square.. I decided that if I could get hold of the square cases, then I can get some fruit cake from M&S which is so moist and tasty.. and then cut it down to size. for mini cakes and the main cake can be sponge.
I started getting 6 pieces out of this slab of cake.. https://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s51/tsia977/Image0699.jpg

but realised they were a bit too big to cut those in half again and decorated with just stars along my theme of blue shades.

My blimmin kitchen is a mess! how do you keep tidy with this decorating lark? lol

The big cake is in the oven.. round one. Gonna be my first EVER cake that hasnt burnt!
haha. and will decorate it later on tonight.

This is all just practicing and throwing ideas around for Mylos christening. I begrudge spending £70+ on a cake and cupcakes/mini cakes when I can do them myself!
I had all the cutters and tools and stuff from my salt dough modeling.. never realised how easy it was. Though I must say the ready to roll icing was on the sticky side a bit so floured that up to work with it easier.. on the finished article I suppose I can use extra icing sugar. And I was using the apricot preserve under the ready to roll.. and then I was licking the stars to stick! haha!!!! its habit.. cos thats what I did with the salt dough! haha.. so these are for the dogs.. I wont lick the decor to stick on the real cakes! haha
