Girls, can you re-cover fruit cakes?

You know I said I had 2 christening cakes to do, well I'm actually just decorating them for the lady. So they arrived this morning....

Now I know I am not the best at covering but I think I could do better blind-folded

I really dont want to 'put my name' to these as such so am thinking of re-covering them.

Oh with them came a bunch of naf decorations and some of those little pram ribbons came too lol

im the same when i do a wedding cake and the couple pass me the ugliest topper in the world to put on it!! LOL u just dont know what to do, do u!!??

have u asked the woman if u can re-cover them...i would...but id have to charge her for it!

yup theres marzipan underneath as theres a big blob sticking out the bottom of one of them.

Thing is, there a favour for a friend of Ants, so technically I'm doing them for nothing, his friends wifes mother iced them.....thing is if i re-ice them, I cant really charge him.

hmmmm...in which case id just decorate it and then not put the pics up to anybody. its a toughy...but u dont want people thinking uve iced them!! LOL
i feel exactly the same with the toppers they give me etc...they just dont match the cake at all sometimes! LOL luckily ive talked a few of the couples out of it!!

Jaq, I would re-ice them…I know your losing our BUT think of all the business you may get from the cakes if they are done to your standard? If they are iced dodgy, people may think it was you and not want to order from you?

I think i'd personally re-ice also, not for just the fact that its your name on the cake but i'm a perfectionist and if it dont look good to begin with i'd hate the end result and it'd piss me right off!

Just shit that you'll be out of pocket for it!

Ive spoken to the childrens mum (her mum iced them) apparently her mother knows she did a bad job but one of the cakes is split underneath so she didn't want to chance taking off the marzipan/fondant to re-do it...so I should really try and cover over the top....yes? I dont want to risk breaking the cake as then I'll be paying for new fruit cakes too

Do I need to try and make them as smooth as poss as they are now or will they be ok with another layer of fondant over? I'm thinking try and slice off some of the top layer to smooth it out? Would a cake leveller work for the top do you think?

oh im glad you are re-icing them!

i think, i would either do a double layer of new icing, or strip them right back and start again.

OR a really thick layer of fondant over it
