Cake Making & Baking Group

I am gonna make some tonight to take to Dorset with me.. Fancy one with a cuppa!! Lol.

Hello ladies :)

I'm going to be making a 21st birthday cake for my boyfriend at the end of this month, so I'll probably be hanging around in here a lot :p Originally I was going to make an angry birds cake, but I'm now thinking I might go with a Tim Burton/Nightmare Before Christmas theme. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to cakes because I usually make cupcakes (which aren't very good!), so I'll be trying to pick up some tips :D

Hi Elpis x
I usually google what I want to make then I have some idea on how to do it x I'm doing that alot with cupcakes at the minute lol youtube is amazing x

I'm working full time now so don't get much chance to come on here anymore :-(

Supposed to be making a cake for my mum and her bf's party next weekend, and I'm totally stumped for ideas, and it's really stressing me out because I haven't got much time to plan/think of what to do. It's a surprise for my mum, supposed to be a birthday party but her bf couldn't book the pub until 8 weeks later :)dohh:) so now it's their 7 month anniversay party..... He's a bit of a romantic at heart....

All he's said is that he wants - 'K pour J pour toujours' on it.

Has anyone got any simple ideas/pics they can share? One got to go shopping tomorrow to get the bits.

Glitterfairy - I usually put mine on 165-170.

Reedy - good luck with your cupcakes!

Laura - you use royal icing? Can you buy it ready made then? Is royal icing the one that goes hard?

I'm ready to give up before I've even bloody started aaaaarrrgggghhhhh
The cupcakes have turned out ok but I think it's my tin that's the problem x they aren't rising enough to go over the to of the cases, the tin is too narrow I think x I bought an ice cream scoo but think it's too big, bcos when I used it I used all the cake mix in 6 cases not 12 x god I'm fed u now :-(

Cocoaone - have you googled? They might have some ideas for you on there x lOads of luck sweetheart x

Reedy are you using the hummingbird vanilla cupcake recipe? I find that I can get 8-9 out if that recipe at a stretch - and they tend to sink back flat too. You could probably get more of a peak if you turn the oven up a bit? I love the hummingbird recipe (nice and sweet, but I usually just use the normal sponge recipe as others prefer it.

I have googled, but all the anniversary cakes are usually quite old fashioned with big flower displays on them, which I hate! I think I might just add a few contemporary roses to it. Or some hearts on flower wire. I'm so uncreative when it comes to designing things. I much prefer following instructions or copying something. Argh!

Is there anything that they are both interested in? Anniversary cakes can be anything really! Flowery or novelty :)

ill show you a few "flowery" cakes I've done that aren't too old fashioned, and could be used as anniversary!

They've only been together 7 months, so nothing sticks out that really means a lot to them as a 'couple', if that makes sense. I know he likes old fashioned arrangements as he always gives my mum flowers in a basket (v old fashioned!) and I did think of doing a cake like that - but they are so out of my league! Your cakes are amazing TJG, but I don't think I've got the skill or time to practice. And I already made the cascading blossom one for mums birthday, so can't do that.

Right, I've decided!

As long as the stuff comes in time, I'm going to attempt something similar to Andrea's Rose cake except it will be single tier and basket weave butter cream around the base instead of green stripes/stems.

Not sure how to arrange the flowers though. How did you get them to 'dome' like that? Bake another cake and then frost it and stick the flowers to it? Styrofoam? Fondant?

Cocoaone - I just use the normal sponge cake recipe but was done 100g butter, sugar, flour but I have seen another recipe which is 175g butter, sugar, flour so might try that one next time x
