Andrea nothing I just wanted to practice making things so made a cow :)

Eternal Im not sure as it's OHs panasonic fz28 he thinks xx

ahhh, did you decide on what you are making for the 1st birthday cake? Seen your status on FB the other day!
Is it for your LO?

I normally preheat my electric oven to 200 and have it on the first setting (it's so old that the symbols have rubbed off!) I think that just turns on the top part like a grill... I'm not sure! I'll make no excuses, I don't really know what i'm doing with ovens and have been lucky so far but this oven is awful! I won't be baking again till it's been replaced!

I can't believe how talented you all are! The attention to detail is amazing! I've never been able to get iceing looking that smooth!

I have an idea what I'm doing for it now. It's bit for Thomas's cake but I know what I'm doing for thomas's xx

Wow, i dont believe i havent found this thread before - i LOVE making cakes and id love to be good at decorating them...iv tried for my Mums and stepdads birthday this year and it was abysmal tbh, so iv got a few questions. You ladies are AMAZING!
I have my favourite sponge recipe which is the classic 175g of everything and 3 eggs one, iv totally eprfected baking them etc. Iv also found a new choc recipe which i LOVE and am v proud of but...

How dp u make ur cake so that its flat anough to ice well?, mine always seem to come out wonky...
What filling do u use between ur choc sandwiches, i tend to just boil stuff down and keep adding whatever i can grab till it looks doable lol, i could do with a real recipe.
WHat do u use to make the little sugar decorations?
How do u ice letters onto ur cakes? Is it just skill or is their a secret trick lol?
Heres my 1st 2 ever attempts...its pitiful but its a start :)
(My stepdads fave animals are hippos and my mums are penguins ...LOL at the B on my mums cake...excus eme and my stepdad, its the only pic iv got :))

you should be very proud of your cakes :) i also would like to know how not to have wonky cakes :)

I use a cake leveler and use them on both sides of each layer. That way I get them super level :D

Hi girls, I've read the whole thread over the past few days and wow all the cakes and cupcakes look soooo good,I'm inspired to get baking again.
My son will be 7 in April..for his 3rd I had a go at making him a digger cake, well it looked horrific..all bumpy and the icing dried and cracked all over :nope: (but he loved it lol,we just told him it was a very old digger and had been in a crash :haha:) but that disaster put me right off trying again,...untill now that is. He's mad on Pokemon so I wanna do him a pikachu cake..either just a rectangle cake and pipe the pikachu on OR carve a rectangle cake into shape of pikachu. I'm thinking I'd be better buying ready coloured yellow icing to avoid disasters there..where can anyone recommend I buy it from online? I'm going to have a practise run first, maybe even a few practise runs to get it really good...if I happen to make a really good cake can it be frozen? xx

Thank u myasmummy...blah how does a cake leveller work? Whar s it?
Sorry im so dim lol :) xxxx

Hiya :)
Practicing is good! Once you have done it a few times you wont need to freeze your best one because it will be alot easier for you to make when you need it!

You can freeze them, but fresh is always better and I'm not sure how fondant will cope with the defrosting process.

You can buy readymade fondant from most cake places online, I am buying from here mostly atm.........

a just cut my cakes til they look straight!

then any bumps will be hidden with the buttercream and fondant!

I am getting a bit scared of the amount or orders I am getting now!

had another order tonight for a Fireman Sam cake, and a Dora the explorer cake all within a few days of each other!

:help:

Taper I used the chocolate cake recipe that you kindly gave me and it came out really well! It was sooooo tasty. I also cheated and bought some ready made choc fudge cake filling, it was so much better than anything I can make (infact I caught my OH with the tub and a spoon!).

Unfortunately I didn't get the time to practise icing it as we had to eat it before it went off.

Pinksnowball thanks for your advice re the bowls to use to bake the fairy toadstool shape, they worked a treat.

I'm just really needing to find the time to knuckle down and get a practise run sorted.
