I need to clean my carpets before the baby is born, they're in a bad state.
I was thinking of renting a carpet cleaning machine, but will also need to use detergent, does anyone know if this is safe during pregnancy?

I also want to paint our bedroom, but because that's where the baby will sleep on the first few months I need a non toxic paint. Does anyone know any good and safe ones?

Thanks

Most paint nowadays is none toxic but i would ask when u are buying it ....I own a vax and nothing on the shampoo states its not safe also i would ask mw and shop who hire them sorry i am not much help today :dohh:

You can hire Rug Doctors from B&Q and Morrisons for about £38 per weekend and they come with detergent.....not sure about the safety, you'd need to ask or get somebody to do it for you!

Thank you for your replies. The rug doctor carpet cleaner Is the one I was planing to rent....I guess if I keep the rooms well ventilated can't be that bad.

I'm sure you'll be fine! I am hiring one soon also as in some parts of the house that don't have laminate we have BEIGE carpet.....and two kids already, that was not my smartest move!!!

I will be going out and leaving somebody else to do the graft!

I cleaned my carpets last year with a steam cleaner I hired from HSS. You don't need detergent, the steam gets everything out and practically sterilises everything it touches. I wasn't pregnant then, just in the early stages of thinking about TTC. I chose it because it's really versatile. You can clean wooden floors, tiled floors and walls and the bathroom and taps, inside the oven, soft furnishings... so many things, all without chemicals. They are recommended for people with allergies.

I had mine over a weekend (Friday lunchtime till Monday morning), it was easy to use and cost about £50 (can't remember exactly). And it leaves carpets dry enough to walk on as it doesn't saturate them. It got all the stains out I needed and everything was loads fresher.

I'd just make sure the room was well ventilated - I had a funny dizzy turn the other day from Mr Muscle - so any strong smell does it for me.

I didn't think of using a steam cleaner. So, it does get the carpet as clean as an ordinary carpet cleaner with detergent?

I've also got beige carpet in the living room and white in the bedroom :hissy:...i mean grey now

I've never cleand my carpets WITH detergent so I can't compare, I'm afraid. But my carpets came up nice and they're pale beige/sand colour.

Thank you. I'm going to play safe and rent a steam cleaner.

I have used a steam cleaner but I didn't find it gave good results....it was borrowed from a family friend who runs a guest house and it was industrial strength apparentely......My carpets still looked dull!

So Rug Doctor for me......and if that doesn't satisfy....new carpet in a kid proof colour!

I would check with who you rent it from and personally would get someone else to do it. As for painting they say do not be around paint till after 20 weeks. We had the whole house painted last week and even though I was 21 weeks I went and stayed with my mum, I felt it was safer for my little man. Most paints are now safe but still have a smell, ventilate the room well, take care :hugs: XX
